You could be right. The bed is around 6m in length so I really just eyeballed it. I think access is the big issue, one that would probably be exacerbated if I did pittosporum as from what I’ve read they need clipping 2-3 times a year to keep them neat.In really stumped as to what to do.

I have gardened for over 50 years on mostly clay soil in the UK and France and I have found that if you want a bed of perennials fairly quickly no dig doesn't work. When I make a new bed I dig in loads of compost, mostly bought as I never have enough home made. I plant the perennials then mulch....

Good luck with more! We have a kiwi as an ornamental but it hasnt flowered in years. Its in the shade but I think we prune it incorrectly: From what I read they only fruit on 2nd year growth, and we were pruning the whole 6m growth every year...

Don’t forget there is a lovely Euphorbia for damp ground, grows well in my bog garden, E.pallustris. E.martinii grows pretty much anywhere in my garden and will self seed.
