Truss vs The Lettuce; Slugs vs Cucumber
I think au naturel and coarse pebbles will be eaten first and vaseline and salt will be eaten last. Egg shells don't keep slugs away so doesn't matter if they are left out.

Gooseberry bushes being eaten
6oz 137cm Natural Hessian Jutethis company sells jute which you could try for mulch. not sure if the grubs could eat into it, doubt they could eat through two layers.

Quince ? Question.
The fruits are very fragrant. Even if you don't like eating them, you can just put them in a bowl and enjoy the smell.
