I had mint planted out in my old garden, and it did spread rampantly but only across the area where it was planted (which was small and separate from the rest of the garden). It didn't pop up...

Chippy Hell, suggestions for strong smelling plants
What about the citronella candles etc we used these to keep biters at bay in the evenings. They lasted months on end . And very strong scented. We bought ours at Home bargains..Also used...
