Growing zinnia from seed-potting out
Let them grow taller before planting out, mine are slow this year with the erratic temperatures. The slugs and snails love them so don't be in a hurry to plant out.

Lavender in trough planters
Lavender doesn't need ericaceous compost - that's only needed for acid-loving plants like rhododendrons etc. Lavender apparently prefers a slightly alkaline soil but I don't think it's fussy about...
