    I've never had newts so I guess it balances out, but the frogs are making a big comeback here after a few years of not so many, I think there was a virus a few years ago.

    No just break it up with your hands, but I often add some sharp sand but its not essential. Remember no hard and fast rules.;)

    Give it a go You just need a few vertical posts to hold it in place. easily dismantled if you hate it but also easily disguised with planting in front and maybe some ivy growing up it.
