If you chose cordons or columnar trees you could maybe fit in more than one. Do your homework about varieties, rootstocks etc for your location and for the size of tree that you want. Here's a good starting point Growing Pear Trees in the North - Chris Bowers & Sons

Beetroot and Chard always look fairly decorative IMO. Runner beans have good flowers, you can get bicoloured ones I believe and white as well as the usual red or pink. Broad beans have slightly scented flowers. Even a few Courgettes dotted around with their big leaves and flowers.

Chicken pellets seem to contain a fair amount of nitrogen IME, but both that and growmore are fast acting, I think it's too early to apply either, bonemeal is slow and contains more Phosphorus, so good for root growth and some nitrogen I believe.You could apply some bonemeal and try and hoe it...

The problem is getting them small enough. I once ordered the smaller size of the gold leaf ones and sent them back - they were huge on me, far to long in the fingers and too wide everywhere so there's no way I could operate secateurs wearing them.I just had a look at the welding gauntlets on...

I personally don't believe they have a long term future in containers, but agree planting in that position isn't a good idea. I think some trellis on the wall with a suitable climbing plant either side of the door way would be a better option.
