Our neighbours have a house in Greece with 800+ year old olives. They told me they trim them with chainsaws, which seemed a little barbaric, especially considering the mess he makes of his hedge.

I am often puzzled by modern life.

I'm not a fan of wind chimes either, I'd prefer the gentle babbling of water but I'd take them over the incessant sound of chain saws we seem to have around here now.

What are we doing in the garden 2026

    What shrub is this?

Google lens says it's Berberis valdiviana. But the foliage doesn't look as shiny as Berberis - also not sure of the scale - a hand in shot would help please! It looks great though.

    Plants you don't grow

Definitely not colourblind; I just don't like variegated plants with the exception of the silvery marking on Arum italicum.

Latest moan from you and me 2026

It could be the seller does not have stock, but wants to maintain their ranking in the search, so they keep the listing active but at a price that is almost certain to mean no-one will buy the item. :)

    New Gardener - help!

Another option is just to cut them as low as you need to, to get access to fix the fence - easier than digging them out, and they might resprout into something you really like.
