We, neighbours, have all been watching the activity for quite a few weeks now, or been held up in traffic queue whilst they transport another long bit or blade.[IMG] 1 of 76 in total all along the valley from Neath to about Pontypridd, this link gives more info than I can. http://penycymoedd.vattenfall.co.uk/2016/07/

I realise these turbines can be an eyesore Pam but how do you feel about them in your area?

I don`t mind them, supposed to generate enough power for 1,500,00 homes when finished.

There are none here on the island but there are 'fields' of them offshore around Liverpool and Heysham where our ferries sail too.

I think that it all depends on where they're sited. some are out of the way and do no harm and some look quite majestic. Others, in the wrong place can be extremely intrusive.

          These are OK :blue thumb:

Shiney, you wouldn't get one in our back garden. But there's a lovely range of hills that I can see from my bedroom window ( no name, they're just the start of the Shropshire hills that eventually become Clee, Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge and if there were some on there they'd look stunning.

You are quite right @shiney! That is unless you don't mind the value of your property dropping like a stone. A few years back people in England bought a house and within a few months wind turbines were put up close to it. They sued the previous owners as they could prove the previous owners knew the turbines were due to be erected. The judge in the case reckoned the turbines reduced the value of the property by 70% and awarded accordingly.
I may be wrong but is appears to me that the people who seem in favour of wind turbines live in large conurbations where the likelihood of any turbines being built close to them is zero.
In principle I agree that there maybe places where their siting is reasonable but the vast majority are sited where it is not. I strongly object to the obscene amounts of money land owners/big business are making out of them (approx. £25,000 per turbine PA) whether they generate electricity or not (£1,000,000 a WEEK as of 2015 was paid to owners to switch them off when excess electricity was being produced).
My biggest fear is what will happen to these monstrosities after their lifespan is up (meant to be 25 years...hhhhmmmm). No doubt many of the companies will have conveniently gone bust just prior to the turbines being retired and then who will clear away the mess? Big companies don't have a good record of cleaning up after themselves. I see Shell is intending on leaving muckle great oil platform legs in place after the platforms in The Brent Field are removed.
Scotland's main tourist attraction is it's fantastic scenery. What do we now have in many places thanks to our beloved government? what were truly spectacular wild places now look like industrial areas smothered in the damn things, often NOT turning. Is it a coincidence that the National Trust of Scotland is proposing to lay off approx 50% of their staff due to downturn in tourism. As a tourist visiting Scotland try driving up the M74 between Gretna and Glasgow and you will see myriads of them. Such a wonderful welcome to Scotland.
The next time you are passing a wind turbine site perhaps stop and get close to them and listen to the noise they make which when the wind blows goes on and on and on and.... Would you fancy this when out in your gardens?
I would feel differently if I believed even 1% that these turbines are making a difference to the health of our planet but all I believe is that wonderful parts of our planet and wildlife are being adversely affected so that a few can make huge amounts of money.

I agree that in the wrong place, and there are many wrong places, they're an eyesore. The 'not turning' bit really annoys me because the technology is there to be able to make much better use of them. They turn them off when the power stations are not able to take the excess and when the wind is too strong. Neither of these reasons are necessary if they used the right technology!

A similar problem applies to solar panels. If there's a power cut they automatically switch off (just when you need the extra power) as there are no reasonable storage facilies and it's a Health and Safety issue.

As with all things, the right piece of equipment, in the right place and using the correct technology is an asset. Otherwise it isn't.

It`s finished, quite scary watching a man standing on the top, interesting to see the blades going on though.
Cannot see it this morning as we have low cloud cover

I have made my views pretty clear about my dislike of wind turbines and why on GC before so I won't go on and on. Just delighted that The RSPB have eventually got their finger out and objected to numerous wind turbines due to be erected off shore in the East coast of Scotland and have won their case:yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:. At last our government has been tackled and been beaten over these monster turbines. There is, to my mind B all point in putting them up to so called save the planet when if these ones had gone ahead they were going to slaughter 1000s and 1000s of sea birds.
