For those of you that don't know about it here is a very brief outline.

Oswald Moseley brought a march of 5,000 fascist Blackshirts through the East End of London.

This was opposed by a combination of local people consisting of Irish, Jews, the local Communist party and a lot of local various ethnic groups. So they barricaded the march.

7,000 police fought against the locals but the locals wouldn't give way.

Eventually Moseley turned his march away.

Having been brought up in that area I knew quite a lot about it from family and friends who were in the barricade.

This is a documentary film worth looking at and seeing right through to the end. It gives a good background and shows the dangers of Fascism. Unfortunately it's raising its head again.

So, Gardiners Corner was the Fascist entry point? The Admin will keep watch ;)

Thank you for posting that @shiney
I found it informative, interesting but most of all, thought provoking. Not something I would have stumbled across by my own devices, but well worth 40 minutes of my time.

Good play on words :yay: :heehee: I missed that one as I know the place so it didn't register.

DEATH OF LONDON LANDMARK: Clothing store Gardiner gave its name to the junction Gardiner's Corner, which brought together the main thoroughfares of East London. In 1972, fire gutted the century-old building and caused the clock tower to collapse. The business had closed the year before the fire.

1950 - I still remember it clearly. It says in the quote above that it was a clothing store. It was also a Department store.

Yes, I'm afraid that the failing EU, it's polices and the Immigration crisis are raising the latent racist and extreme Right Wing and they are slowly becoming more visible and potent. I don't think the EU itself is helping in it's bureaucratic allocation of quota's to EU members who have a history of Right Wing Facism and are now reviving it with the closing of borders and the seeming abandonment of the Schengen Agreement which work fine when not under stress of people fleeing War.:dunno::coffee:

The trouble is, people who are NOT racist in the least, and who DO NOT object to CONTROLLED immigration are:

          a) being lumped in with those extreme right wing facists, and

          b) are utterly sick and tired of paying through the nose for just about everything, with zero prospect of any relief or support whilst our government spends untold fortunes both here and abroad dealing with immigrants, a considerable majority of whom are NOT really asylum seekers. Yes, there are those who are genuinely in need and genuinely in fear of their lives, but for every one of those there is ten more who are on the bandwagon because it is a bit of a wheeze that will also see them get a better life (usually at the cost of others).

The blunt truth is that this country is NOT coping and hasn't been for some years, and until someone gets hold of the absolute basics, it is only going to get worse and worse.

Yet again, I currently find myself in a position of great uncertainty, and make no mistake that if it goes the wrong way this time around I am going to fold, because this time I have nothing left to give.

Do I care about the plight of those who are desperately in need? Yes, of course I do. And I do not care where someone has come from, what their religion, sexuality, colour, creed or anything else is for that matter.

I don't care who says different, this whole global situation boils down to two things - money and power; the vast majority of the governments and those in positions of power do not give to shites about the general populous, and are only out to serve themselves; all they want is more power to make more money. The same can even be said to some degree about the terrorist organisations - they are only out for themselves, power and money. NOTHING will change for the better until our political establishment realise that they have to really grab the bull by the horns, and make some really radical changes - the most radical being that we help our own people first.

              Yes, it'me chiming in.

I agree that immigrant screening should be based on willingness to embrace the customs of their host country while being allowed to celebrate their unique background. However if one claims asylum, should they choose to return to the country they fled, it should be a one way ticket unless conditions in that country have improved.

Immigration should not be temporary. It should be a life choice.

Otherwise, temporary residence rather than "false"belonging, should be an option for those seeking to get out of harm's way and only until they feel they can safely go home and not using the status for solely financial gain.

Just my two p.... oh wait, now that reminds me I need to go spend a penny :)

Although we always deviate from the topic (not a bad thing) we seem to have got to that stage extremely quickly. It wasn't really about immigration at all. It was about remembering the people that decided to stand up against the rise in Fascism and what failing to do so led to in Germany not many months later.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

It should also be genuine - I have seen far too many images of so-called asylum seekers trying to get into the UK, all the while updating their facetwit accounts on the latest iPhone or whatever. And as for those who took the huff and set their temporary accommodation alight (at least three times that I can recall), well, they should be left to stew in their own juices.

The real problem is that there are so many people who feel exactly as I do now - thoroughly beaten down, fed-up, over-worked, over-stretched and some of their sentiments ring true with the Right Wing extremists - the net result, whether we like it or not is that at least some of our feelings now align with those Right Wing extremists, further strengthening their support.

I consider myself to be a reasonably compassionate person, but even I am reaching the end of my tether. Only this very evening, I caught a glimpse of the C4 news, and there was this French fellow on there who stated that "we, the alliance are at war with Russia...." - that is mighty scary talk, but sadly it is true. I would not be one bit surprised to hear that we are part of WW3, and all the while that decision is neither yours or mine. Russia could really kick our arse (militarily speaking) in a very short space of time, and I do not believe for one minute that any of our EU cousins would step in; it seems that the EU has very much a "every man for himself" attitude to the defence of our shores, coupled with a "Thou shalt not harm a hair on the head" approach to our defence and offence strategy.

The world as we know it is Donald Ducked, finito, end of story. The whole time you have a so called civilised country paying circa £45 a month for WATER, at the same time across the world there are companies who pay considerably less, is nothing short of lunacy. Sadly, however, the lunatics have been in charge of the asylum for a good few years now do not know (or caere) about anything remotely related to this) whilst all the time looking for business and property investments.

As I see it, it can only be a matter time until this all comes home to roost, and the whole thing collapses like a deck of cards. I live in hope that there is some "balancing" of property prices to slow down the madness and hopefully see building programmes to ensure that we are acutally building housing and transport to the degree that it is needed. However, no matter what, house prices that have changed have the potential to go on to be altered by the availability of the times that the closure is active.

I agree, Shiney, we have had numerous threads on immigration and probably will continue to do sol. But this thread is to highlight the upsurge in Fascist/Nationalism/Racism, which are inexorably linked. Perhaps it's me but such extremism seems more prevalent and on the upsurge in Europe taking us back to the 1920's and 1930's..............don't we ever learn:wallbanging::doh::coffee:

I agree, but wonder whether some of it is highlighted by the media so that it seems much more prevalent than it used to be. There is almost certainly more of it than there was in the last two decades but I also remember back to my younger days (no disparaging comments, please :snork:) when there was a lot of intolerance and abuse of minorities.
