You'll be delighted with your 'Spencer' SPs, Woo......a very well established variety with a superb scent.
They were bred & introduced by gardeners of the Spencer family (Princess Diana fame) at Althorp House, in the Victorian era.
I would add, excellent for cut flowers, rather than for exhibition.

Mine are going in this weekend, I got a general mix for scented ones
                  and a dozen perennial ones
The ones I am hoping for a good show from are "SCARLET TUNIC" a special, with seeds sold through the Poppy appeal for wounded veterans

Just wondering whether plants them around a pergola would be ok? Should i tie some string or anything atound the pergola to help them climb up it?

They should be fine climbing your pagoda, Snorky.
They will need a little help to start climbing, but once started they will romp away.
Don't be tempted to plant too closely as congestion will create mildew problems later and be mindful they have the potential to grow 8ft (2.5m) tall.

If the pergola gets good sun this will be fine . SPs need something to attach themselves to with their tendrils (photo). Otherwise if they are climbing a pergola column you can tie them in every 18" with plastic coated garden wire - spool below is only a couple of pounds :blue thumb:

Thanks for the advice! :) I've planted them along a partially shaded border but I thought they may do ok as there are some everlasting sweet peas that have grown there and they were rampant. Fingers crossed. i have some more I can plant in full sun :)

Just on everlasting sweet peas....I cut them back really hard a while ago....some signs of life as shoots starting again. Is that normal or should I not have cut them back hard??

Just reading about Eagle sweet peas being good.my mum, gran and myself bought packs from Hampton court and all 3 of us had hardly any germination...probably about 2 seeds each in the pack. My gran is a pro gardener and so can't just have been my novice skills. Hmmm.
