So the US appear to have dropped the "mother of all bombs" on Afganistan, all 2100lbs of it.

Err, wasn't the RAF dropping 22000lb bombs from Lancaster Bombers in late 1944.

No doubt this newer one is a bit more refined, but the 10ton Grand Slam was pretty effective I'm inclined to think ;)

    I'm sure @ARMANDII will remember it well.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Yep, they were. pete. But they were a different design and were a "earth quake" bomb and an upscaled version of the Tall Boy [12,000lbs] bomb which was used to sink the Tirpitz.
The American bomb is using higher energy explosive and is a pressure bomb able to infiltrate passages and caves killing with high pressure The Americans have used it a couple of times in the past but not on caves.

Why has he sent a large naval force to the seas off Korea? Why did he authorise the devastating bombing of Syria last week?

Presumably because Korea keeps testing missiles in that area, possibly ones capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Not sure about the Syria bombing, not even sure if the chemical weapons used came from Assad, I'd not put anything passed both sides in that war.
But the media were saying, up until that point, Trump was in Putins pocket, now they are saying he is antagonising Russia?

He upset "the media" so now he has to pay the price.

And we all know that it is "The Media" that have ultimate control.

From what I am reading, it is not 2100lbs, but rather 21000lbs, and therefore nearly double that of the tallboys.

I am unsure how to feel about this to be honest - I said to Mrs C months and months ago that it was time that something had to 'give' and that something had to be done about ISIS and the general terrorism/immigration issue. Around the same time, Trump stated that he would (and I quote) "Bomb the sh&t out of ISIS" if he were to become President. Well he did, and he has started to.

Much as I dislike the man, he is at least having a good go at trying to honour the pledges that he made prior to his election, and I think (at least partly) that this is why there are so many surprised entities in the global community as nobody in modern times believes or expects anyone up for election to actually carry thorough and try and fulfil their promises.

Part of me finds current events very disturbing, but then there is another part of me that wishes that they could actually manage to blow the shite out of ISIS for once and for all.

Because North Korea has repeatedly told the USA that they intend to nuke them as soon as they have a suitable missile to do it with. They are getting close to having such a missile. America doesn't fancy getting nuked. America's response is very calm and measured under the circumstances. They are after all perfectly capable of simply making north Korea vanish in a puff of smoke on a whim if they choose to, but they know a lot of people will frown upon them if they do that without trying everything else first.

Hi dai, well, it's pretty certain that Bashar al-Assad did use Chemical weapons on his own people and chemical weapons are banned.

"The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is a multilateral treaty that bans chemical weapons and requires their destruction within a specified period of time. The treaty is of unlimited duration and is far more comprehensive than the 1925 Geneva Protocol, which outlaws the use but not the possession of chemical weapons."

To be honest, dai, the missile attack was only focused on a Syrian Air Base where it was thought that the aircraft that were used to deliver the chemical weapons were based. The Americans informed the Russians of the intention to strike the airfield before the action and, no doubt the Russians informed the Syrians. The strike was merely a slap on the wrist, nothing more, with the Americans not wanting a direct confrontation with the Russians.:dunno:

Hi FC, the Tall Boy weighed in a 12,000lbs, the Grand Slam weighed in at 22,000lbs and the MOB weighs in at 20,046lbs [according the White House]. The MOB is a an upscaled version of an Air Pressure Bomb, of around the Tall Boy weight, that has been used in action before without attracting world attraction. The target for the bomb wasn't a town or a city but a target in the wilderness that ordinary bombs wouldn't scratch, and has been a thorn in the side of the Allies and Afghanistan's for decades........and if they only killed about 36 militants they were very expensive at the cost of about $20 Million for the bomb:dunno:...........although, granted, the target was the cave and tunnel complex and the militants were a "bonus":coffee::snorky:

I'm thinking you mean a similar weight as the Grand Slam, basically 10tons.

My original post was mainly about the fact that a plane from the 1940s was capable of delivering a 10 ton bomb, and did so on more than one occasion.;)

Moab is actually a nice little dusty town in Utah if I remember rightly.:biggrin:
