Amazing journey

We have had a chipmunk living under our deck for five years. He was only a few weeks old when he showed up and quite quickly became tame, our granddaughter named him Simon. He would scurry under the lounge looking for handouts while I was reading in the screenhouse and would climb up and sit on my foot until I got him some goodies. When my tomatoes began to ripen I was furious that something was eating holes in the tomatoes and someone on a gardening forum wrote that it was probably chipmunks. I placed a game camera by the plants and the only critters it photographed was Simon and a robin. I was so mad that I trapped poor Simon and banished him to a baseball field several miles from our home. Next day I found holes in the tomatoes again! As it turns out, it was birds, not Simon eating holes in the tomatoes, so I purchased netting to place over the plants and have not had a problem since then. Then I remembered seeing Simon catch and eat slugs under the plants, and felt really bad about banishing him to Cropsyville. Actually, we missed having him around and I seriously thought of going back to Cropysville and trying to trap him.
This morning when I went out the back door, there sat Simon in his usual spot all happy to see me again, so I guess all is forgiven. What an amazing journey this little guy must have had, it would be like dropping me in mid-west without a map and no directions and having to find my way home. In order to get home he had to cross a few congested highways and a number of minor roads. Nature has given animals some amazing navigational skills that we will never understand. We are all glad he is home, and home to stay.

So, FC , are you going to tell us about this dream then ? You never know, we may be able to save you the psychiatrist bills

 

That's a lovely story Hydrogardener and I'm glad to see the little fella is back home with you. He obviously knows where he is well off!

FC you really need to water down the juice you drink before retiring at night.

 

Well, things are back to normal as he has forgiven me and is keeping company in the afternoon while I sit in the screen house and read. I am giving him extra snacks to make up for his three week odyssey.
