We have had a chipmunk living under our deck for five years. He was only a few weeks old when he showed up and quite quickly became tame, our granddaughter named him Simon. He would scurry under the lounge looking for handouts while I was reading in the screenhouse and would climb up and sit on my foot until I got him some goodies. When my tomatoes began to ripen I was furious that something was eating holes in the tomatoes and someone on a gardening forum wrote that it was probably chipmunks. I placed a game camera by the plants and the only critters it photographed was Simon and a robin. I was so mad that I trapped poor Simon and banished him to a baseball field several miles from our home. Next day I found holes in the tomatoes again! As it turns out, it was birds, not Simon eating holes in the tomatoes, so I purchased netting to place over the plants and have not had a problem since then. Then I remembered seeing Simon catch and eat slugs under the plants, and felt really bad about banishing him to Cropsyville. Actually, we missed having him around and I seriously thought of going back to Cropysville and trying to trap him.
This morning when I went out the back door, there sat Simon in his usual spot all happy to see me again, so I guess all is forgiven. What an amazing journey this little guy must have had, it would be like dropping me in mid-west without a map and no directions and having to find my way home. In order to get home he had to cross a few congested highways and a number of minor roads. Nature has given animals some amazing navigational skills that we will never understand. We are all glad he is home, and home to stay.

How weird is this - I had one hell of a restless night the other night, and even woke myself up at one point giggling because I was dreaming about a squirrel that had made our back garden his home, and was getting up to all sorts (we do have a family of squirrels that seem to like my garden for whatever reason, so maybe that was what started my mind off.....) - anyways, this squirrel was getting up to all sorts, and we had (apparently, from the dream) adopted him as a bit of a pet.

The really odd thing? He was Simon the Squirrel.

        Hi Hydrogardener ,

What a fantastic and heartwarming story :) I'm glad he's found his way back home. Perhaps he thought he was on holiday :)

So, FC , are you going to tell us about this dream then ? You never know, we may be able to save you the psychiatrist bills :roflol:

I can barely remember much of it, but I do remember a squirrel called simon living in the back garden and taking the Mick out of the birds when pinching their peanuts, and hiding stuff in the shed (good bloody luck to him for that one, as it is like a bomb-site), and general antics. We are lucky here in that we have managed to create a bit of a wildlife magnet and get loads of different birds who are even getting a bit cheeky and hanging about on the fences etc when we are out in the garden, in case we are putting more seeds or nuts out - - Mrs C even leaves a wee pile of nuts for the squirrels so they don't get jealous of the birds! I often sit in the evening watching them all in the garden, so it must have been in my head.

Makes a change I suppose - the last time I woke up giggling was because I had farted rather loudly and woke myself up

That's a lovely story Hydrogardener and I'm glad to see the little fella is back home with you. He obviously knows where he is well off! :)

FC you really need to water down the juice you drink before retiring at night. :snorky:

Well, things are back to normal as he has forgiven me and is keeping company in the afternoon while I sit in the screen house and read. I am giving him extra snacks to make up for his three week odyssey.
