    Hi All,

Wonder if someone can teach this old dog some new tricks pleaze.

Came, via the PC, not the mobile, across this site about loudspeaker design and it looks quiet interesting.
    https://www.skillshare.com/classes/...asics-and-enclosure-design-DIY-Audio/12633221

However all but the Intro lesson are rated as premium content.

Now clicking on a lesson says its 0.73p to view, but does this mean per lesson or the whole series ? suspect the former.

Looking on the Skillshare site it says you can view all content, not just this project, for $10 a month.
Skillshare Online Classes - Android Apps on Google Play

Now I have never paid for anything from Google Play, though do notice you can use paypal with them now.

How safe is Google Play payment system, are there any traps to avoid and any experience of the Skillshare site, as good as they make out ?

    thanks.

Google Play payment is very secure - I haven't used it a lot, but I have used it. I had one issue with an anti-virus app, and started an online chat with a Google rep for advice, and within minutes they called me on the phone and bent over backwards to help. Really good customer service.

I haven't any experience of SkillShare, other than it is a name that I know and have seen about - and I suspect that you are right, in that the 73p is per lesson.

I have used Google play for years, paying through Paypal , it's about as secure as you can get.

Thanks guys, gives me confidence to use it.

You might be able to guide me on another online payment point please.

As you can see in the screenshot, they say the goods ( a loudspeaker drive unit) are free of import charges, but is that really true ?
As I understand things, anything over £15 is liable for import duty , if applicable, VAT and uk carrier charges for handling the goods ?

Hi ricky, when you use global shipping import charges amount is added on at checkout and you don't pay anything when its delivered because you've already paid, in this instance its estimated at $19.13,

If you go into checkout you don't have to buy it will give you the exact amount,

Basically the seller sends it to global shipping and they take care of delivery and import duty you pay the seller $64.37 and GS approximately $19.13.

                Hi FC,

Thanks, no link, but soon found it with a quick search, think I will go for it, a bit of audio tuition needed here !

ATM the more I ask the more questions it reveals, so am rather at a loss as which way to go, speaker wise.

Though some US speaker kits prices look good, checking on the carriage and duties etc it is cheaper the buy the parts in the uk/eu.

Just been given this link which refers to the tweeters in my current speakers, though it needs some nerve to undertake that hack as they are now obselete items.
                Raven-TA (Dayton RS180s with Peerless H26TG45-06) - AmpsLab

Yesterday I was given some old Tannoy Mercury Mx2 speakers to compare with mine and it did reveal the lack of treble clarity that link suggests; also quiet a difference in bass, the Tannoys 5.5" will punch it at you, whereas my 8" seem lower and mellower .

One thing you might know, the Tannoys have a white type of paper /composite cone but there are a few orange/brown stains on them about 5mm diameter.
Any idea what I could use to try an remove them without damaging the cone ?

                thanks

Ah, sorry no idea why that didn't paste (although homebrew wine may well have had something to do with it..... :Wino: )

That hack looks to be a few bridges too far for my liking - you are getting really deep into things there, and there is a hell of a lot of potential to irreparably damage things (removal of the ferrofluid for a start - what is taking care of heat dissipation once it is gone?). Personally, I would be inclined to audition some of the stuff that is available on the market now (B&W 685 S2?) and see if there is anything that would fit - and perhaps consider a sub-woofer (assuming you can fit one in somewhere) that would give you that mellowness you are used to and want to retain.

It might also be worth keeping an eye on the likes of ebay for something like Celestion SL6's - - they are not going to be cheap, but they are an excellent speaker that I would say closely align with the products from the likes of Rogers or Castle; another one to look out for on ebay that I think would suit your ear would be TDL - getting quite rare now though, and as far as I know the company no longer exists.

KEF are also worth a look for a mellow sound (same parent company as Celestion nowadays, ironically). B&W CDM2 are another worthwhile used buy, that would come pretty close I reckon. However, as you know it is a minefield, and only your ears will know......

The Tannoy MX2 had a doped paper cone (from memory), although what the doping consisted of, I have no idea. I suspect that it will be some sort of wax, so I would be very reluctant to go at it with any kind of detergent as that would destroy the doping. You could maybe try a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water and see if the mild abrasive quality shifts it whilst the bicarb absorbs the stain? Very small area to test first though! They are a pretty reasonable wee speaker, but are quite typical of the Tannoy/Mission style of the day (lot of bang/punch for the buck, and anything but laid back)

                    Hi,

Thanks, a cotton bud and water removed most though a bit of bicarb helped with the biggest one without raising the pile of the fabric, looks so much better.

Just got one 10 x 4mm chip on one of the front baffles top edge which seems to be like the edging strip you use on Contiboard.
Thought about using some Conti Edging strip or the Colourfill sealers, but getting a direct match unlikely.
The front baffle has a similar flat bottom edge so think a careful cut from that unseen edge will be the best way to get a piece to splice in as it will be an exact match.

Otherwise they are in good condition for such an old speaker, listening to them now and seem to be getting used to their sound, though a good bit more use/ listening before I decide relegate the old speakers, but an interesting comparison.

Yes, that tweeter hack does seem a step too far.

Had a look around for those speakers you mention but none around apart from one almost new pair of 685s at £420.

That isn't a great price to be honest - they are around £500 new I believe.

That of course is always the way when you change hi-fi components, there is a period of adjustment - - often, it is not until you try and go back to your old kit that you realise you actually prefer the newer stuff.

                        Hi FC,

Can I ask for your thoughts on speaker ports , have seen a bass reflex 2 way standmount design with two differently sized cabinet options, one for a front port and one for a rear.

In my small room I can only have the speakers on stands a few inches away from the wall instead of the often recommended couple of feet for rear ported ones, though the Tannoy MX2 rear ports do not seem to sound that bad because of it .. though I do not play a full volume .

Do you have any general pros and cons tips about either, not looking for super technical views , the US audio sites are too full of that.:)

As a general rule of thumb, rear ports are only really suitable if you can get them away from the wall a bit - a couple of feet is pushing it too far for most people's rooms in my opinion though, and you will get away with about 4-6 inches at 'normal' listening volumes, as long as the back panel of the speaker box is parallel to the wall. Introduce an angle and you will introduce standing waves at variable speeds and the sound will go muddy (you will have destroyed the soundstage at the front at the same time); also, keep rear-ported speakers away from corners, and definitely don't put them on wall brackets high up near the ceiling as they will sound shockingly bad in comparison to their normal performance.

Front ported are generally a lot more forgiving in terms of placement, but can sound a tad on the 'light' side and lack warmth (very subjective! many have benefited from a lot of engineering to overcome this); this can be overcome to a degree by adding a subwoofer (carefully chosen and set up) into the mix, but at the same time the additional space required tends to outweigh the very reason that most people choose bookshelf speakers - space!

EDIT - that issue with the forum display looks like a caching issue - I shall go and purge....

If you find that your bass sounds muddy with rear ported, an old trick is to lightly stuff the port with some stuffing material (the type that is used to stuff teddy bears) - this still allows the air to pass, but reduces the flow a bit, and in turn reduces the effects of the speaker being close to the wall.

I would be careful about the US tax, Ricky. I paid around £160 for a camera lens from America and paid nearly a third on top of that in their punitive tax.:wallbanging::dunno::snorky:

                              @Fat Controller - thanks a nice a clear answer ! :)

Have got the Tannoy Mercury MX2 connected up while I refurbish my old speakers so will be interesting to see how I get on with them and if my old ones sound any better once rebuild with some mods like new electro caps etc.

@ARMANDII Yes thanks, I did the sums on importing a speaker kit etc and while the advertised price is tempting the carriage and costs made it simply too much.

If I do build one it will be with UK or EU sourced parts, have found quiet a few new audio parts suppliers this side of the pond.
