[IMG]Salvia 'Amistad' by longk48, on Flickr

It gets moved into the shed when it turn cold.

It is a little early. It will look better in a few weeks time when the days are longer. Talking of which, S.gesneriiflora is in bud and should look really good in a couple of months time.

In the winds before christmas some falling debris knocked a couple of shoots off Salvia gesneriiflora. I popped them in a bottle of water on the kitched windowsill to root and one of them has decided to bloom!

The first seedlings of 2018 to germinate are S.nubicola. Next weekend I'll get on with the bulk of my Salvia seed sowing.

I tried S gesneriiflora a few years ago and it didn't come through the winter in a cold greenhouse. I didn't have the space to keep it indoors.

The mother plant should be looking something like this in a few weeks.................
[IMG]Salvia gesneriiflora by longk48, on Flickr

It's needs to be frost free over the winter. It is hardy but frosts cut it back to the ground and being a winter/spring bloomer that makes it pointless.

At a guess I have about thirty to forty species plus some cultivars as well.

No point keeping it indoors in my experience. It blooms but very poorly. Far better cold but frost free. Mine has been outdoors, bubble wrap over it when it gets frosty and in the shed when it is arctic.

That could be a whole thread on its own!

S.gesneriiflora is certainly one of them.
Of the hardy species it is probably Salvia dolichantha............
[IMG]Salvia dolichantha by longk48, on Flickr

Of the tender species I would say Salvia discolor...............
[IMG]Salvia discolor by longk48, on Flickr

Out of the cultivars/hybrids then it has to be Salvia "Love and Wishes".............
[IMG]Salvia "Love and Wishes" by longk48, on Flickr

                    Favourite annual is Salvia algeriensis...............
[IMG]Salvia algeriensis by longk48, on Flickr

                    Honourable mentions go to;
                    Salvia atrocyanea..............
[IMG]Salvia atrocyanea by longk48, on Flickr

                    Salvia forsskaolii................
[IMG]Salvia forsskaolii by longk48, on Flickr

                    And Salvia microphylla "Royal Bumble"..............

The first Salvia of the year to bloom is Salvia coerulea..............
[IMG]Salvia coerulea by longk48, on Flickr

It's a winter blooming species. The buds started showing before the first cold spell of the winter so I've had to keep it as cool as I could but frost free since then.
