Newt?

Just found this wee chap out my back door. Ran around shouting "there's a gecko outside!!!" "It'll freeze!" Then remembered what countr we were in and it's a newt. Ha ha. I also saw a couple of small slugs nearby so I'm hoping he will be eating those.

If so then yes it was a newt.

Apparently they are always drunk.

I saw a little one october time and he was playing dead when i picked him up (i was cutting back the ladys mantle so didnt want to chop him). I'm wondering if its the same one but just got bigger.

The pond just outside our house had conservation bods visit last year-something to do with newts but I wasnt about so dont know all the details.

 

He had come from the direction of the shed with my belgian beer stash....so highly likely!

 

Looks like a female Smooth Newt.

 

In my younger days Newts were plentiful in our garden and around local ponds/canals/etc., including Great Crested Newts.

In the fields around the local town, the pits and trenches dug for soil investigation purposes in connection with planned housing developments quickly filled with water and attracted many hundreds of them (including lots of Great Crested Newts).

They were still there when the contractors turned up and bulldozed them.

 

unfortunately they didn't have the same protected status that they have now.
