OK, I lost my beloved Shadow last year, our old 15 year Loki this year and at 13 y/o ( and I'm dreading this) may lose my soulmate "Tess" sometime soon..... I love Border Collies and I will want another one but Carol says NO, I'm not getting any younger so perhaps she's right?

Sorry to hear your sad news Vince. May be Carol might come round to the idea at a later point.

Maybe consider re homing a Border Collie?
Friend was in a similar situation. She had been around working Collies all her life and after she retired she had 2 further Borders but not from working strains.
When she lost her last Border she felt she was too old to take on a Border pup and thought about what would be the situation if she died, who would look after her dog?
So she decided to adopt a Border from The Dog's Trust.
She now has "Pants" what a name:). He is 7 years old and delightful (previous owner had moved abroad with work commitments). She feels it was the best thing she had ever done, giving a lovely dog a home and not having to deal the potty training etc of a puppy. She seems just as devoted to Pants as she was with her previous dogs. If anything happens to her I believe it is a simple process for Pants to go back to The Dog's Trust. here's hoping that will not be necessary.

I was thinking of maybe doing something similar when I retire, always like border collies, only down side I see is that there are not that many unwanted border collies about.
They try to get you to take Staffies, of which they have loads, or greyhounds maybe.

Nothing against those breeds, but it would not be my first choice.

Pete the kennels are full of staffies mate and knowing two people who have rehomed staffies from kennels...i'd prefer one from a pup.

Everyone as their own choice of breed of dog and staffs take a lot of training as domineering carries hard in their nature especially reds :snorky:...go for a pup mate of your own choice and bring it up to how you want the dog to be

It's not something you should agonise about, if you want another dog, get one. However it's important to make provision for it in advance, should the dog possibly outlive you or you reach an age when you can't care for it..
As to whether to get a puppy, or an older dog, there are a lot of pros and cons, so it's a decision only you make.

One of my "Philosophies of life," is that it's far better to regret not doing something, than to wish you had.

On a lighter note, an update on our friends' dog Sam. He was the one they found tied to a tree and abandoned in Dunham Forest a couple of years ago. They reckon he was about a year or so old at the time.
They could have just left him at an animal shelter, but they decided they'd have him and have never regretted the decision.

You can never tell how such dogs have been treated before they came to you. But he is very friendly and loving and likes children. But he's very much an "outdoor dog." Maybe he was kept outside from a puppy.

He likes being outside in the garden, but he doesn't like the back door being shut. If they shut it, he howls a bit. But stops if they open the door. He doesn't want to come in, he just likes to know he can when he wants to.
He's the same when they go away to their caravan.

But he doesn't mind being left in their car for an hour or so, when they visit, as he knows they have to come back and then they all go home.

Beautiful dog :love30:and him wanting the door open is insecurity of probably being left again because how dogs are mistreated it can still mentally scare then in some factors...even though the new owners adore them :)

                Dogs aren't daft.

Our son mentioned that Ted likes being at their week-end home in Hayfield, more than at their main home in South Manchester.
We said, it's because he know you're going to be there all the time and not go off to work each morning leaving him on his own, with just the dog walker coming to tend to him at lunchtime.

Our Ghost is pregnant, I suppose a GSD puppy might help, not a Border Collie but still a pastoral breed?

Then get a BC puppy when Carol's not looking?

I'll post a few more pics soon, eyes open now and their markings are coming through. They are a lot more active now so won't be long before they're terrorising the household and tormenting our Merlin (he loves puppies but prefers the quiet life). :)
