As someone starting out growing a hedge I would appreciate some advice. In February I planted some privet hedges and would like some advice on pruning to encourage growth now that they seem to be growing. I am nervous about cutting off too much as although they are tall they are very thin. Can any one give me some advice about how much to cut or where to cut. Should I just cut off the tops or should I work my way down cutting off a little at each branch? Also should I make sure some leaves are left on. I have included a photo as hopefully this helps.

There are a couple of previous threads that deal with growing hedges - so that you get the desired height and density as quickly as possible - might be worth a search for more detail :dbgrtmb:- but in a nutshell prune in the early years to promote density and then let it grow to the desired height.

From my experience privet is fairly robust and will take quite a harsh pruning - I wouldn't try to prune individual branches - just use some clippers to get the shape you want.

Picture looks a bit odd - why are there some stems much higher than the others being supported by canes?:spinning:
