Gardener's Delight Tomato Seed Germination and Growing Thread

It’s about time I chipped in with a report re 2006 seed. I’m still waiting to do a taste test but a nice looking crop is evident and all is as to be expected.

The same can’t be said for the plants - there must have been some mutagenic influences on the seed over the years. . I kept three plants for myself which are being grown in large terracotta pots placed on filled gravel trays on a very sunny patio. Each plant bifurcated at about 10” above soil level. Other plants were distributed around family and friends who report a similar outcome. Plant height is to be expected and is quite vigorous. The oddest aspect is that one tomato truss in my Mother’s greenhouse has formed normally, tapering to a point in a downward fashion - except the growing tip has continued to grow and has formed a new stem which has turned upward and is now behaving as a main stem would. I’ve never seen this before.

I have noticed exactly the same with one of my cordon tomatoes, and I was wondering whether it was normal at all.
I observed it for a few days with curiosity but then I treated it as a side shoot and snipped it off, even if it was producing another truss.

 

Growing only GD this year. Picked a couple of pounds this morning......taste to me is as good as ever. A freshly picked tomato warmed by the sun is delicious A good bounty so far and plenty to come

 

Looking good @JWK. Can see your dehydrator is going to be in full swing. The $55, 000, 000 question tho is will you be growing them again and if so which year seed? All very exciting...well quite anyway!. Have all of your plants been grown outside? Also slight snag to the reliability of the experiment maybe, is, the weather has been out of the ordinary and some. I wonder if in a dreadful summer results would be the same, although perhaps only the yield and not the taste would be affected?

 

You must have been very lucky @Verdun, because, myself included gave up on GD a few years back as they were very bland and uninteresting.

 

They were grafted plants silu.....I dont know if the sourced material is different. I am fussy about tomato taste . Mine are excellent

Hated sungold....too sweet for me.
Usually compare toms and "trial" a new variety every year.....GD always wins!

 

I wonder if anyone knows the original parents of gardeners delight, it would be great to start again. OK it would then be an F1 and need to be bred out /stabilised.
I would be quite happy to grow an F1 gardeners delight.

has anyone tried Gardening Delight F1 from Marshalls supposed to be an improvement on gardeners delight.
