      Another one that is doing the rounds at the moment is emails purporting to be from TV Licensing saying that there has been a problem with your direct debit, and to click on the link........ DON'T!

        Some try using different false names, got an email sent to one of my 'burner' accounts yesterday hoping I was called 'Fred' which, if they sent out enough emails, would arrive in the inboxes of 100's or 1,000's of Freds.

              Had 2 of those messages left on our answerphone in the last month. As we're exdirectory they must be working through every combination of numbers, and if they get an answer, try again.

              The problem is, despite the availability of "amazing technology", there's no caller display for international numbers (which the majority of spammers appear to use), therefore no call blocking, or what would be even better is the ability to have a list of permitted/trusted international numbers.

              The last time I checked, only withheld numbers, or specific UK numbers could be blocked. It's about time this was changed.

                  On our phones we have Call Guardian. You can block all international calls and it will only allow through any international number that is in our phone's directory. When any number that is not in our address book calls they are asked to announce themselves and press the hash key. Until they do that the phone doesn't ring. It will then ring and the phone will play back their voice and ask whether we want to accept the call (Press 1), send it to answerphone (Press 2), say not available (Press 3), bar the number and tell the caller (Press 4). I think there are other options but we never let it get that far.

Yes tyhere are methods that you can take to keep yourself free, but all the time, you ar being questioned etc and for the scammers, you are feeding them.

                      Since having Call Guardian, over two years now, we have not received any scam calls on either line (we have two landlines and no mobiles). Call Guardian came as part of the phone (a chip inside it) and costs nothing. You need to have number recognition for it to work and that comes free from BT if you pay a year in advance (10% discount for doing that).

                        Could you explain that further please @shiney. How is it free if you have to pay a year in advance?

                        @Sheal

                        Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my explanation. :doh:

                        Number recognition is free if you pay your line rental one year in advance. :blue thumb:

                        The silly thing about it is that you have to ask them to set it up. They rarely offer it to you although it's free. :noidea:

                          @Sheal BT used to give 16% discount for paying a year in advance but have dropped it to 10%. It's easier to pay the year in advance, giving you a better return on your money than the piddly 1% that most banks give, and you get free caller display. The caller display will show the number calling (if your phone has a display) or the name of the caller if you're phone allows you to put their name in its memory.
