Hi guys. So today I have taken down and mostly removed a greenhouse and brought it home. This is an old greenhouse and has the cement boards all along the base. 8x8.

Just had a horrible feeling that these boards might be asbestos cement boards .

Is there such a thing ? Have read similar queries elsewhere tonight but have never seen people confirm that asbestos boards were actually used in greenhouse kickboards.

What do you guys think and have you heard about this before?

    Thanks..

Lots of asbestos still around especially in roofing.
If they are, they will probably be the same stuff..

The funny thing is i cant find confirmation of it being in greenhouses but it does look very suspicious.
I will have to try and find an alternative material to use as kickboards. The cost of disposing of asbestos once its on my turf is truly terrifying.

Hi Wee Tam, A couple of years ago I used a proper company to remove and replace a roof on my outside loo. The total cost for removal and a nice new roof was around £600. I can now fill a water butt using this roof.

Hmm it could be @WeeTam as it was used for so many things, as was cheap and hardwearing and weatherproof...Until they found out about its dangers... There was also another kind of material around in the 60s/70s that looked like asbestos but it wasn’t, wouldn’t like to say..Not sure if a pic will help either...

Our local recycling point has a special container for small amounts of asbestos from the public.. Have you checked yours out.. I think you have to arrange with them when you bring it but no charge as far as I know.. Might be worth checking out your recycling centre..

Just like to say that asbestos cement board does cause a certain kind of hysteria, I can remember cutting it up on a saw when I was an apprentice, long time ago.

While I dont suggest you do that anymore, as I say, lots of the stuff around, I have a shed roof and a garage roof both with corrugated asbestos sheeting.
If you dont mess around with it, and keep it damp if you do, its unlikely to be a problem.

Most farm buildings of a certain age seem to have the stuff, its everywhere.

              Thanks @john558 , @pete , and @Marley Farley

I think i will keep the greenhouse but leave the cement boards alone. The potential cost risk isnt worth it for this particular greenhouse.

My local tip wont even allow tyres into their shiney new premises so uf i dare show up with some asbedtos i think i will be sent straight to the local courts :oopss:

Well, I would have thought local tips have an obligation to take the stuff.

The local councils keep winging on about fly tipping and basically doing nothing about it.

Fly tipping of asbestos should not be encouraged, as should no form of fly tipping, but if the councils wont take the rubbish it will go on, and get worse.

A house down the road from me had its asbestos roof removed by an Irish gentleman who promptly flytipped it on the local Lords land. He was caught, fined but legged it back to Ireland. Councils :wallbanging:

Our weekly collection point was scrapped and its a 22 mile round trip to the nearest recycling centre

Hmmm, 11 miles each way isn't too bad @WeeTam they can't have one on every corner. And it is definitely the right thing to do :)

My waste disposal place is about the same distance and it doesn't coat much to bring things there depending on the weight .

So to help others in the future....

Having phoned Robinsons greenhouses I was informed that no asbestos was ever used in the manufacture of their kickboards.

I only found the faded manufacturers label this morning hence my phonecall.

Are you thinking of Supalux, the 'asbestos free' replacement for Asbestolux?

Some 'asbestos free' products were not what they were supposed to be ... Supalux – all that glitters is not asbestos free! : Environtec

Was always wary of supalux, never have considered it much better than asbestos TBH.
MDF will probably be the next major scare regarding board materials.
