We as members of various gardening forums perhaps dream, dreams of reading such questions. Great, fantastic that like-minded lovers of gardening want to know more. Pertaps an individual wishes to put a name tag on a plant. Good for you.

Having got the,'gardening bug'. We discover that a wonderful new world has suddenly opened up to us. Not only are we developing an interest in plants and planning all-sorts of building a collection etc, but. What's that buzzing around me. Suddenly we begin a trek down the path of a naturalist. Naturalist NOT naturist. I prefer to keep my clothes on.

So lets get started. If I may, in my field of expertise. Question. Can you tell me the name of this Fuchsia? The fuchsia family goes back almost to Biblical times. At onr time I had over 400 different named fuchsias multiply that by 10 of each. OK hardies, cascades, trailing, giant blooms etc. They were all there. Many flowers looked the same. Might I ask members. Have you ever watched the TV series. Silent Witness. Here in the series many factors prevail. Likewise in horticulture similar factors exist. More information needs to be gathered.

Now to roses. The ROSE. The Queen of all plants. What makes it so? Perhaps the visual effect. Whether the rose is a HT, climber, rambler, shrub. musk or whatever. Something about this gift has stolen your heart. You adore the fragrance, you see such beaty in the shape and form of the blooms. Whatever it may be. Time has come when you want to know more.

So. How long have you had this rose. Where did you get it from. In your garden, where is it planted. How does it grow?
So simply asking for your plant to be identified. Can you provide more information?

@wiseowl I think Mike is thinking of the number of requests of the "Please identify this" type where there is just a picture and no further information.
Apologies @Mike Allen if I misunderstood your post.

Apologies to everyone. In a lot of pain at the time of writing that thread, I was trying to encourage friends to perhaps provide more info.

Please delete. Once again my apologies.

Hope you're feeling better soon @Mike Allen - I get what you're on about. In the main identification areas, people may not realise that things like whether the foliage grows alternately or in pairs, whether the stem is square section etc, all help find the ID. We are not all as good as @Silver surfer in realising what things are!
