Saving emails.

I'm changing my ISP from Virgin Media to Vodafone. At present my email system is included in the ISP. Once changed, I will use a Gmail address. My knowledge of computers is just above Zilch.

Is there any way I can save my emails. I have searched the net but must admit, much of the information goes way above my head. Emails I wish to save are all of a science nature and most contain multiple documents. My OP platform is. Win 7 Home.

 

Are you using a virgin mail ie. Blueyonder etc.?

If so,,as far as I know you will still be able to access them via your web browser even after you change supplier.

 

Interesting as we are with VM ,which is just getting way too expensive, and are looking to move to Vodafone as soon as their GigaFast fiber arrives, seems its only a mile away at present.

For your email, sounds like you log in directly to VM to access them ?

If you use an email client, like Thunderbird or Outlook, then your mails are also held in your PC.

Its also very handy because those programs also hold the email passwords so you do not have to keep entering them every time you want to check your mail.

Found this bit of info on the VM forum, basically if you set up say Thunderbird, it will bring in all your existing VM account emails.
Think you will find Thunderbird a nice clean simple program to use; lots of Ytubes on how to set up the accounts if stuck.

@Mike Allen there is no reason why you can't set up your Gmail account now and transfer your emails before switching your ISP. There's also a possibility that Gmail may have an 'import' function so you can move them all in one go.

 

If you have a web based e mail account I really can't see why you cant access it from any web supplier.
I've got blueyonder and yahoo accounts, think I had a G mail one once.

 

My present email system is [email protected] This comes as part of the VM system. Over time I have learned that VM seem to be totally wrapped up in their own world. Past years I have exported/imported, drag & dropped etc with no problems. VM claim they allow you to continue to access your emails upto a max of 90 days from closing the account. My granddaughter has managed to move a few to some file system at the rate of four at a time. I have close on 600 to move. As said. These are all of a scientific nature, and most emails actually contain several individual notifications etc. These are all provided by Wiley. Some I have opened and printed relevant pages of interest. To print the lot, would probably burn my printer out, plus I would need more book shelves.

Very annoyed today. Appointment arranged for engineer to install overhead cable and set up new router etc. Not a soul appeared. Daughter Amanda contacted Vodafone. Sorry, we will have to make a new appointment. Folks, if you ever conemplate going to Vodafone, Don't rely on their promises to call you back. Hey! good start to a new 'romance'. I too am with Virgin Media Mike; my email is ntlworld having had cable for about 30 years. I'm running Win10 without problems at all. My emails are received by VM which I check occasionally especially if I wish to blacklist spam; I use VM email though as my archive.

A few months ago after years of using Office Outlook emails started to go missing and many weren't received causing lots of problems until a friend recommended OE Classic ;

I downloaded the free version to try it then upgraded by just paying £25 and have used it since. I've just had a look and there is a wizard that will pull your emails through to OE Classic then you can easily move them around. As I say I'm running Win10 so am unfamiliar if this will work with Win7 which is way outdated.



Here's the top of the OE Classic email page; under File you can save emails to Documents etc. I find OE Classic to be user friendly and to date am happy with it.

I'm no wizz kid on computers Mike but this works for me. I was disappointed to lose Outlook Express but this is an excellent replacement.

I did have a Gmail account but closed it because I felt the program not as user friendly.

VM is now a lot more expensive but because we've been with NTL and now VM so long with few hassles we'll pay up with good grace; I've looked at other broadband suppliers and a number of them are scary; better the devil we know?

Many thanks Colin. I think I've now got it sorted. My granddaughter has now become my personal IT/Computer techie.
I have for years simply gone along with ISP's, as each have been taken over, Cable & Wireless, Vidiotron etc and Virgin. I would have stayed with Vigin but. I complained several times. Service was great. Customer support, not so good. I began with dial up for Virgin. Then cables were laid locally so I availed myself to this. No problems.
Then charges went up and up. I felt hard done by. I only used the ISP for internet broadband and landline phone, the latter is mainly for incoming calls. My charges have gone up to £57 a month. Enough is enough. Complaining did nowt. So I decided to leave. I have chosen Vodafone. 18 mth. contract, broadband and free unlimited phone, @£23.00 amonth. Now Virgin don't want to lose me. Suddenly I have offers of two months free of charge service, and the £27 a month. Latest. £23 a month. I am a man of principle and NO.
Vodafone have waived the £60 setup fee. This i great, as BT Openworld have now got to provide an overhead cable. I am now waiting for the GRAND SWITCH OVER.

Thanks for the enlightening information Mike and I wish you well once you get set up with Vodafone. I'm going to check our VM charges; I'm pretty sure we pay around £60 per month and the landline is only free evenings and weekends; we've no problems with VM services but it looks like we're being treated by them like mugs; we've been with VM for 30 years and deserve better as loyal customers.

I'd be happy to learn of your experiences not only in switching to Vodafone but in how VM & Vodafone compare regarding broadband speed and usage; if the services are like for like then yes we're being ripped off by VM. We aren't too worried about the savings but I'm with you regarding principle.

I'm definitely not up to speed with modern electronic services regarding TV reception; we use YouTube a great deal because standard TV is usually an insult to anyone with a grain of intelligence; we're totally sick of all the sport and bad news.

Fingers crossed Mike for a smooth grand switch over; will it dim our lights.

I've just had a quick browse of Vodafone and agree it looks good.

Here's VM;



Our download speed is 108 Mbps which is superb for watching YouTube movies and music videos without constant buffering; YouTube is now increasingly poor due to lots of adverts and we don't want to pay £12 a month to YouTube to get rid of these; I sit with the remote nearby allowing adds to be skipped. Our bundle at £61 per month includes landline with evenings and weekend free calls; unlimited broadband at over 100 Mbps and TV I think 129 channels of mostly rubbish.

It will be interesting Mike to compare your broadband performance once you switch to Vodafone? We too used to have dial up at 1p per minute with snail pace speed of 2 Mbps? How things have changed. We aren't too bothered regarding switching to save because we do use our broadband a great deal both for computer and TV.

Virgin claim to be upping the speed all the time, but basically I've never noticed any difference.
I think the Wi Fi just stays the same, you need to connect with a cable to notice the difference.

Above is the speed test I've just carried out pete on my computer; yes I'm running on cable and our TV is hooked up via a pair of TP Links so we gain full benefit.

Yeah I've tried speed tests, if you are on Wi Fi they dont seem to change when the supplier ups the speed.
If you suggest the speed is slower than VM states they won't actually tell you this though, but tell you to use a cable, which to my thinking went out about 10 yrs ago
I dont use a cable as I'm on a laptop.

We are also on fibre VM and a similar sounding package as @Retired but will be paying about £55 in December when our loyalty discount expires, they say they can offer the same on new contact for £46 but its still way over the top for what we need , so we have also looked at BT type of fibre to the cabinet from Vodafone etc and they can only offer 35mb typical with 25mb guarantee in our area, which sounds low but probably still ok for most things but at £20-£22 , still no where as bad as VM .

We have just tried tethering our PC via the mobile phone and that just gets 2-3 mb speed, but still works find for email and browsing which is a good way of staying online if the cable fails.

@Retired, you say you are in Huddersfield which is one of the many northern towns being connected up to a new fibre to the premises network by City Fibre and Vodafone are offering its Gigafast service of 100mb & phone for £28, worth checking to see when its in your area.

Also agree that Gmails interface is not nice to use, and we also used to use Outlook Express but now use Thunderbird which is totally free and you can pull in as many email addresses as you need; you can have a mix of Gmail. NTL , VM etc adresses but just use Thunderbird to receive and send them, no need to use Gmails own inferface.

Though we still have the old NTL email address we have moved virtually everything to Gmail or MS Outlook as this allows you to switch ISP without the problem @Mike Allen is having.
