    Hello from Surrey!

I’m a relatively inexperienced gardener trying to fill in some gaps in my knowledge.

We’re currently making big changes in our garden and I expect I’ll have questions about where to put plants I’d like to have and what to put in the remaining spaces as we progress.

So far we’ve ripped up an old L-shaped deck, added a conservatory and patio, and built a workshop / potting shed hybrid room. This weekend we’re demolishing the old shed and after that we’ll probably pause to take in the very changed view! I also have designs on a little greenhouse, but until then the kitchen window and conservie work well as substitutes.

In the meantime I have a beautiful apple tree, which I’ll try to identify this year; many roses, including a brambler, bushes, and patio varieties, some of which I know the specific variety of and some of which I’m also hoping to identify; two raised beds, which I use for growing vegetables using a lazy square foot method; and a burgeoning container herb garden, with a bay tree, thyme, and a new young rosemary plant.

I’m really looking forward to learning from you all and helping my garden match the beautiful ideas I have in my head!

Between renovations & lockdown schooling it’s not at its best right now, so be kind!!

This is what I have handy - some are older and some are newer.

The first one is looking from the house towards the new shed with the old shed on the left. The new shed has Georgian bars but we hadn’t put them up yet when this photo was taken.

Second is looking back at the house from the new shed.

We also have space behind the new shed as we had to bring it forward so the eucalyptus trees at the back didn’t have their roots disturbed.

The garden is about 25ft wide at the bottom and looks smaller than it is right now because of the haphazard layout and ongoing work. Should look much bigger by Tuesday when the old shed is gone!

I can see you have a nice long garden :blue thumb:. If it were me, I'd have separate themed 'garden rooms' going down the length of the garden - all connected by a windy path. As you walk down the path - your view is blocked from seeing right down to the end of the garden - so you don't know what's just around the bend in the path. But then, that's just what I would do.

That sounds absolutely lovely - I do love a secret garden that that sounds like a whole house of them! Sadly it won't work for us - I need to be able to supervise my daughter without my view being obstructed, and she needs plenty of open space to play in. I would like to create "zones" - sort of the open plan living version of rooms, if that makes sense. I'd like a seat in the shade under the apple tree and I'd like to extend some of the beds at the perimeter so they're not a boring long line, get some curves in there. We were also thinking of stepping stones from the patio to the new shed, so I'm with you on the windy path part!

First thing is to finish getting the shed down so we can have a proper look at what's there. Lots of it is gone already:

Everyone has their own view on what is a 'good' garden - in the end the only opinion that matters is your own :dbgrtmb:.

Please keep the pics coming - be interesting to see how things progress .

                    Shed's gone!

Lots of tidying up to do now.

The next big job is to break up most of the base pad, but I need to decide about a greenhouse first so we know which part to leave in place.
