If your home network seems to be sluggish - look at the number of devices you have connected at 2.4Ghz. If there are more than twenty 2.4 Ghz devices on your network it will slow down.

To solve this problem invest in a dual band router and connect as many devices as possible to the 5Ghz frequency.

Amazon devices can use both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies - so move these over to the 5Ghz range. Generally smart plugs are only 2.4Ghz.

Don't forget that bluetooth devices also use the 2.4Ghz frequency - so if you have bluetooth speakers - these will count towards your twenty items.

There's 3 of us here, if we have a smartphone each plus PC and laptop that's 5 - but we aren't using them all the time. Also my PC is hard wired, so I can only get to 4 max on WiFi.

How do you get to 20 unless you're renting out rooms?

Strange. I had an email yesterday from Virgin Media. They have uprated my Wi-Fi at no extra cost to me. You know me, and computers. We don't get on. I am quite satisfied with my setup. I use the system simply to send/receive emails. To use the internet as a quick research tool, plus as a storage for photos and general documents. I do not play games etc. My landline phone is on the same network. I can wander away ftom the flat say a mile, and still make and recieve calls. My microscopes are each fitted with cameras, that in turn are connected to my computer.

My router - which I'm using as an access point which is fed the internet via a mifi router - is capable of managing 64 concurrent devices. They don't tell you that performance of the network depends on whether 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. So yes, 64 connections but the network will not perform to your expectation in certain configurations.

Funny you should mention this Mike. I'm fully mobile here - 'phones and network - Virgin are due to move from EE to Vodafone late 2021. Well, without telling me, Virgin switched over to Vodafone which messed up the mobile signal. I had to change the settings in the mifi router from EE to Vodafone to get it up and running again. I would have appreciated a quick email from Virgin to let me know they were changing the settings.

Yep, a couple of light bulbs, sockets, cameras and the Amazon gear.

Don't watch any terrestrial or satellite TV - everything comes via t'net. When the network fails I can't turn the TV on.....

Be interested to see what impact 5G has - a friend of mine who is wired at the moment will be moving fully to 5G when it comes on line. 3G/4G should speed up as people migrate to 5G.

Be very wary of such emails from Virgin Media as the scammers often used VMs name and letter head to send mails about such things ,and asking you to click on a link to confirm you want to etc.

Have received them myself in the past and some are hard to see they are scams at first.

Haven't received any such 'wifi' mail from them ourselves ..

Ah yes I have a WiFi printer too, and might use it once a week, hardly going to consume any bandwidth. Plus an Amazon Echo which probably does take a tiny amount when we play music.

Trouble is most folk cannot get out of the price rise, stuck for the full length of the contract.

We now have another fibre provider, this time all the way to the house with Vodafone, so might jump ship next time, Vodafone is a lot cheaper for the same speed and they specify only a rpi type of rise in price. The catch is Vodafones customer service has been ranked so low for some years, are they any better with Fibre ?

Definitely agree but, at the moment, I'm happy to be lagging behind. We don't use wifi and our two computers are hardwired as is our TV (when they delivered the TV a few years ago they said it wouldn't install properly unless connected so they hard wired that as well - powerline adaptor). I then switched off all the 'smart' applications in the TV :heehee:

No mobile phone, no smart speakers or things like Alexa, our printer is too old to use internet but is in constant use.

A cousin of mine is into all this tech (part of his job) and has 87 connections :rolleyespink:. He complained to his provider that it was slow and they sent him a new hub which has solved the problem. Even the lighting and heat in his tropical fish tank is controlled by wifi but the fish don't seem to have learnt how to use it.

I'd forgotten about Smart TVs - so the numbers start to add up if people have two or three.

We have only one TV on a Virgin cable so don't need WiFi for that.

When we do childcare for our son and it's TV time, the remote control is useless as the kids want to watch Netflix or YouTube, that has to be selected from a mobile or tablet, not mine as I don't subscribe. I have to get my two year old granddaughter to tell me how to work their tablet and usually get it wrong, TV time can be over by the time I work it out.
