I always dump old compost on the allotment where I grow the veg.
I always think of vine weevil as mostly a container problem, rather than an open ground problem, I may be wrong.

It always amazes me how people these days dont keep things and take them down the tip.
I know I have a fair amount of space, but I have areas that are used as places to keep stuff that might come in handy.
My next-door neighbour has a pristine garden, now, and never keeps anything, any left overs after doing a job goes straight down the tip.

Where does he go when he wants the odd piece of timber, or the other day he scrounged a jubilee clip off me, his shed contains no odds and ends, if he doesn't want it right now it gets dumped.

Ye Gods! Things have got really silly in UK since we had to get rid of two households' worth of junk. £4.50 to get rid of a block? This is a joke, yes? It annoyed the hell out of me that different types of rubbish were allocated 'quotas per month'. When you do a project, you've probably got a lot of stuff to get rid of afterwards. You might not use the tip again for a couple of years!
Sadly, France is making exactly the same (target-led) mistakes made over the Channel. And the fly-tipping, which was non-existent here, has started already. Quelle surprise!
Rubbish collection is already included in the Council tax, but soon we'll be forced to pay for a minimum of 10 collections per year, + figure based on weight/number of bags. Grrrr!
Sorry  Back to vine weevils.....it would really be worthwhile to empty out all the compost, sift through it and then spread on the raised bed/re-use in the barrels if clean. It would be a shame to miss any and have the problem start all over again.

Sadly, it is indeed the case @noisette47 - although I accept it does vary from council to council. These blocks/bricks are essentially concrete so I cannot see why they can't simply be ground up and recycled into something like sub-base for roads.... we certainly have enough roads in need of repair.

Councils and governments the world over seem to have forgotten what they are there for who pays for their existence.

Local and county council here don't charge for anything to go to the tip but have limits on building waste per week. Everything else can be dumped free of charge as long as it's not commercial. So a professional gardener would have difficulties. Round here the gardeners have arrangements with the farmers.

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Cambridgeshire you can take any domestic and garden waste to the tip for free yourself.

The only time you have to pay is if you're a professional gardener, builder or house clearer. If you're doing it for a living on an industrial scale with a Transit load, of course waste disposal has to be handled differently from a householder chucking away a boot full of accumulated junk.

I only wish that was the case in Surrey (Spelthorne), although it appears the price has dropped to £4 - Waste we charge for at community recycling centres - Surrey County Council

So, even if you tip out every single barrel and carefully sort through the compost removing every single egg and rub, what's to stop adult weevils from elsewhere in the garden returning to lay their eggs?

Good point @Scrungee - they clearly came from somewhere to begin with, so could just as easily again.

I have cheated again this year for compost - rather than going again and again to get some, as I can only fit two or three bales in my car (saloon), I have ordered 15 x 120l from Wickes which is being delivered on Friday with no delivery charge. Got some new canes coming too.

Does anyone know how to find out how much money is left on a garden centre gift card?

You have to pay to dump hardcore and soil, asbestos and probably chemicals old paint etc.

                            But household stuff is free.

You wouldn't believe what gets buried at the bottom of my black bin though.

Try looking at your last till receipt. Try looking for your last till receipt.

They include loads of stuff I'd class as household rather than 'commercial'.

Replace a broken towel rail in your bathroom and that's £3 for the the rail and £3 for the tiles. Take just one more tile from your kitchen and that's another £3 (kitchen and bathroom tiles separately chargeable). A small bathroom cabinet plus small shelf would cost £6,

Take a small bag of bark chippings from your garden, a broken chimney pot you've been growing plants in, the compost from it and some trimmings from re-felting your bird table roof and that's £12, etc., etc.

Tip: Save unwanted bricks and lumps of rubble to put at the bottom of your bin before you cram it full of 'commercial' waste to prevent it getting wedged in and having council prodnoses start searching through your rubbish.
