ANYONE BUYING NEW SEED FOR 2021?

Well, after years of growing everything ornamental, I thought I'd chance my hand at eating stuff. I've done the sow n graze with salad crops in the greenhouse before, but I've actually ordered some veg things. Don't ask me what cos I can't remember, it was hours ago, probably just the usual roots, leaves and floret things.
I haven't gone all bunny hugger, I'm trying to find plants that the snails will eat rather than me tenders! (plus a lot of it is multi coloured to match the garden colour scheme)

 

Nothing new bought ( yet ) ,I do have loads left over from last year so don't ..really ..need anymore, but never say never!!

Wasn't too bad when I was attending to my Dad's garden as well..but now!!

 

I love the look of that recent Dianthus...the feathery looking one.

 

Gosh how very kind of you. I love phlox. I think they maybe my favourite plant. In the current climate I'm not sure my conscience could cope with you having to take a trip to a post office. When things get safer and if you till have some spare then Id gladly buy some from you as I'm not sure there will be any available anywhere this year even if places are open. Couldn't get any last year either which is why I was considering seeds but it seems that is a non starter. Id need to buy heated seed trays and all the gear and I dont have a green house either. Bit of a daydreamer sometimes.

 

Last year I bought about 400 plants (mostly bedding). Due to my business being inactive for almost a year now and I'm having to watch the pennies, I'm growing everything from seed this year. I dabbled last year... but can't get the compost right. I used third coir, third all purpose and a third perlite.... only to discover it wasn't suitable for the fine seeds I was using! So... armed with quite a few packets of seeds (all flowers but a mixture of perennials and annuals) I'm poised and ready but still needing advice on the best compost to use.

Depends what you are sowing, but for most seeds I would wait until the first week in March before sowing. For very fine seeds (dust like) I use Seed Compost and mix the seed with silver sand to spread them over the surface. A fine layer of perlite or vermiculite over them would help.
Follow the instructions on the seed packet, mainly warmth and light
If you ask around someone may give you some silver sand ( very dry and fine sand) I bought a bag a few years back and this will last me at least 200 years!

No rush , I couldn't post any out at the moment any way unless you'd like a block of ice / snow to accompany them . I'll take stock in a couple of weeks when things may start showing life.

 

A few posts ago I said I wouldn't buy anything this season because of all the leftovers I still have....

Well I had a weak moment yesterday. Saw those seeds for 0.49 € at my local Lidl and just couldn't resist.

 

Would one of our lovely members of admin kindly start a new thread for 2022 please, as some of us already have seeds for next year.
