New lawn being laid from seed.

Question for lawn officionado’s…..


Im goin to be laying a new lawn and putting down around 300mm deep of sand, soil, chippings for drainage…

my idea is to put a layer of gravel, then sand and then soil……at around 100mm deep of each.

Is that ok, or will it be not enough soil for the grass to grow???

 

Grass needs a minimum of 4 inches of soil Jowwy so your estimate of 100mm is not far off. The only concern I would have is with the sand and chippings underneath. Will it drain to easily for the grass to stay healthy, knowing the soil is at a minimum?

 

I can easily put 6” topsoil instead………i just want to try and make it as firm and flat as possible

or i could replace the chippings for more sand instead???

 

If the soil underneath is clay then I would say leave the chippings and sand as you've suggested and add more topsoil.

 

Soil underneath is 2 tonne of topsoil and compost that i laid last year………..at around 8” in depth

 

Sorry, I meant the original base soil, not what you've laid yourself. With what you have laid already I would suggest that the chippings wouldn't be necessary if the ground drains well and just use the sand with that extra bit of topsoil.

Compared to mine it's perfect. I haven't started on my lawns yet, there is still too much taking priority in my garden - four and half years on.

Shifting that lot will give you muscles and you'll know you've got them after a while.

 

Shifted them once already from front path to back garden…..i love my wheelbarrow lol

 

Yes, I'd be lost without my wheelbarrow too - for shifting rocks.

 

So today 2 tonne of sand and chippings arrived………chippings will be used now to fill up the boarders around the garden, before decorative stone arrives later in the year.

 

What sort of gravel are you putting down underneath the lawn? Is it so bad the it need the extra drainage .

 

Its not really for extra drainage. Its to help build up the slope in the cheapest way possible. Its pea chippings and at £45 a tonne, its way cheaper than another tonne of topsoil and will fill the space quicker.
