Onion Sets .. how late

Hi Everyone

I bought onion sets today and I have popped in the fridge to keep them dormant .

With all this rain I havnt had time to prepare the onion bed.

what’s the latest date roughly can I plant them

I dont usually plant until April.

 

Because I'm on clay I start my onion sets in modules in the greenhouse in mid March , they're then ready for planting out in early April. It works better, for me, than planting the sets directly in the soil.

Rather than module trays, I use the plastic shelf trays that garden centres receive potted plants upon.75mm dia is ideal,
Filled with spent compost, they have large drainage holes and enable one to check when rooted.
matching Before planting out, suspend watering so as to keep the compost as a block. Cut a hole in the prepared bed(bulb planter/tin can ideal if size is chosen) and transfer rooted onion as a block to the hole. Water in and job done.
This gives a flying start, prevents birds pulling out and is simple to space appropriately.
