Well, Ive been umming and arring for a year or so and made a decision this AM. The Jap Anenome's have just been dug up and disposed of. Dont get me wrong, they were lovely in late summer and autumn BUT they invade EVERYWHERE. They are like a weed. They need constant digging up to keep them to size. The roots intermingle with other flowering plants and before you know it, the whole bed is taken over. So they went today. Im sure i'll get the odd leaf sprouting up as they produce from root (just like bind weed) so a constant watch for the next year or so.
Well that is a shame. Always tough to get rid of things I think. Still if it is more work and worry than you can bear then it's the only way sometimes ... I have had a clump or two in all of my gardens - think they are very handsome, especially the whites and height and the lateness is always welcome. I've never had a problem with invasiveness though. Always seem to keep to a very slowly spreading clump that is easy to keep in check. Perhaps it is under certain conditions they go haywire? Anyway, you can now get on with putting in something you like better. What are you thinking of to replace them?
Pity you could have boxed up a few and sent them my way, lol. I had them in a previous garden and like you say they were very nice in late summer and autumn but i have none in this garden. Mrs Chopper
No idea yet. Im thinking on it. I remember a friend of mine planting a few in his garden. In 10 years it had taken over the whole of his back garden. I feared that this may happen with mine. Even now, when i dig up a plant to divide or move to another spot, i keep getting Jap Anenome leaves sprouting out of the moved clump. All it take is a piece of root to get going.
