IMHO...I don't think Admin or Mods should donate....they put in a lot of unpaid work in to the smooth running of the forum:paladin: :ThankYou:

We all put in with no exceptions, except that I pay twice as Ziggy borrows from me:dunno::lunapic 130165696578242 5: I'm still on the annual subscription as well but I'm not sure what the procedure for that is now:scratch::snork:

Wouldn't it be easier if we had an annual subscription. Lots of sites I belonged to used to charge between 5 and 10 pounds per annum. I don't think that's unreasonable and with the number of members we have got it should pay for a supersonic website. Seems a bit much to expect Webmaster and others to subsidise the site. After all you cannot join a gym without paying subs or any other social club and this is very much a social as well as educational site. Oh ok, I'll shut up and go quietly then shall I?:)

Hi Moyra, always good to hear from you. I'll enquire if the subscription option is available on this new system, but I don't think it should be mandatory, that's not GC's style:snork:

Can we not have a system where by you pay a subscription, for three months or a year or whatever.
You then get a reminder when your subscription runs out.

If you dont pay a sub certain parts of the site are not accessible, plus you get the ads.

But we need personal reminders, when our subs have run out, I for one cant remember things like this.

I can only speak for myself, Pete, but to me GC is an open site where we do rely on the good will and appreciation of members to donate. Guests who don't register can't post but can peruse the site. People who register as a member have the choice of donating or not. Let's face it we have a real mixture of members, those who participate and contribute quite a lot, those who are here occasionaly and those that you only see now and then, so subscriptions can be a bar as well as a "blessing". I wonder what other people think:scratch::snork:

Well thats OK armandii, and I go along with you.

But you cant run an open site and then keep asking for subs.

You need to jump one way or the other, and if it costs X amount to run per month, that money needs to be raised in a dependable way.

We're not far apart in our thoughts, Pete. Running the site costs £££'S and there's no getting away from that. But again, to me. GC is different from other Gardening Forums [apart from being the BEST], in that it is a more relaxed, open and not rigid or pressurising members constantly for money. The donations subject came up, indirectly, from the moving of the site to new software and then Jack taking up the flag for monies for GC. Yes, we need the money but it's a fine line between voluntary and mandatory and you could change the nature of GC without realising it.
But like I said......what do other people think:scratch::coffee:

Another forum I'm a member of pays for itself buy having corporate members. It might not work here but the idea is good. Its a car forum where specialist mechanics etc are corporate members. They pay a fee to be on there and because most people dare not clean their own injectors or don't know why their car is running lumpy, they delegate the work to trusted mechanics, ie the paid for members. Not sure if the technique can be applied here in some way.

I do agree though that it should be easy to set up an annual/monthly/quarterly subscription. I hate PayPal. It gives me grief, but if I can set it up with no effort then no problem.

I must also say though that GC must have enough members now, because it seems to me that a significant proportion of the current threads are about fundraising, and as much as us regulars know this is a special forum, it occurs to me that many prospective users will see all the fundraising threads and simply move along.

Okay, well I put the question to the Web Master and our Resident Techie, Richie, and the answer is Yes there is a subscription method set up!!!:hapfeet:

If you click on your user name at the top of the page it will present your control panel window. On the listed options in the panel, seven lines down on the right you'll see "Account upgrades". Click on that and you get a page with the options for subscription should you so wish to do so.:snork:
