Time ago we all started from one point , most of us with no experience have bough Hostas , iris , lily , agapanthus , clementis , goji berry , wisteria and then our taste start to go to more sophisticated plant , hardy tropical, palms , bananas , bamboos, cactus , you name it , my point is those beginning plant are now really worth it?

the plant opposite the hammer , was an hostas , must have spent around £20 just in snail pallet and look at that , must have paid them £2 from wilkinson and with all the poisonous plant in my garden they are the only plant who really get eaten by snail .Are they really so tasty
Iris = really nice flower , last a week and then a stalk of mesh
wisteria = 6 years and no even a flower yet
lily= it will take a lily beatle to make them look like ........
goji berry = 4/5 years no even a berry
clementis= they grow one season and next they look like a dead plant
agapanthus= get bit boring but , fair play , no complain.

I would never buy any of those plants except Agapanthus which does very well around here.

ps, That Parthenocissus is really quite attractive.. reminds me of Impatiens omeiana

I would never bough them today , those are classic plants that you will buy when you don`t have a clue about gardening , they look good , they are cheap and they are still there.
the garden is getting small and while i was breaking the floor to create a new cactus bed , manage to get 12 snails arount that hosta and start to think ...do they really worth?

Yes they were there to brighten up a neglected space maybe, now it's time to move on, maybe you can give them to a neighbour or grow them in pots or something, but otherwise focus on a new idea.

my hostas and all the other plants loved by snails and slugs are doing fine, but my lupins have been decimated by white fly this year.

Don't get rid of them completely, just relegate them to pots or something.. if you like them but you find it hard to part with them, just dig em up and pot them.

I think we're all guilty of getting the wrong plants, Sal, or keeping some that should have been on the compost heap a long time ago. :snork:

I will wait till September and try to swap them or give to someone who really like them .....even I`m really tempted to try to eat hostas , just to understand why snails love them so much.

I'm glad you clarified this point. I saw the picture, and the is it all worth it type question, and I thought the weather had finally cracked you up and you'd gone out on a mad frenzy of rage to smash the whole lot up:loll:

Oh, Sal, probably too many to mention.:heehee: You've seen pics of my garden,I think, and there are some plants that appear and shouldn't be there but I think about the balance of Nature and all that Jazz and they stay at least until they've flowered.:snork: My gardening covers all aspects, unfortunately, so I make many mistakes in many areas and I get fed up with some plants, drink a couple of glasses of wine to slow the stress, but I always come to the same conclusion................I love gardening with all it's foibles, frustrations, successes and failure so like all gardeners I keep gardening.:snork:

Clueless , be honest I was more tempted to cover all the garden with a massive greenhouse , uv light , heating and p..s off all the snails in my garden .

Another plants that keep popping up is the Dhalia , stop overwinter them years ago and in some how they still come out.

Armandii I used to love to go in the garden with a drink , sit down , relax and thinking of what i would chance or try , but those day if I`m holding a glass of wine the time i reach the bench it will transform it self in a glass of water and the snails will tell me to go back in , because there`s not space enough for all of us.
