Nobody (that I'm aware of) has ever seen it produce fruit. My dad seems to think he once saw it produce small brown nuts of some sort but he wasn't sure enough to describe them.

I might be wrong, but I think walnut trees have very pretty flowers in spring. Never seen any significant flowers on this tree.

Not wishing to imply anything about the quality of your photos clueless but are you able to take some leaves and photograph them on a plain background so we can get a better view :)

That's a very diplomatic way of saying the photos are rubbish:)

I know, that's why I took quite a few. I took more than I posted, and then selected the clearest ones, but they're not ideal I know. The tree just wouldn't keep still, and my camera is just a phone. Its pretty good, and i could see it frantically trying to autofocus as the tree taunted it by moving in the breeze.

I don't know if I'll have time to go up tomorrow, but if I do i'll pull a few leaves off to bring home for a better pic. Otherwise I'll get up there next weekend.

If its any consolation, I have a tree id book that is very good. It gives ID based on leaf shape, bark colour and texture, growth habit, flowers, fruit and habit etc. The book is very easy to use and claims to cover every native British tree, and most naturalised garden escapes. It didn't help us with this particular tree.

Could it be a very old and decrepid Bay Laurel?

Can you bring a leaf home and scan it in?

          I'm guessing its deciduous?
Maybe losing a few leaves early, it looks a bit thin.

Just a wild guess at this stage until we get some close ups.

          Balsam poplar?

To my eye the leaves don't look "alternate" enough for it to be a Walnut.

Need better photos though, I'm afraid :)

Thanks for all the ideas for far folks.

The tree is perfectly healthy. Its shutting down for autumn. Perfectly normal, because autumn starts on my land about now, bearing in mind our northerly position and the fact that the land is on fairly high ground and very exposed.
