Over the years I have taught many people the basics of Manual Photography by way of a short course. I've seen recently a few members here either upgrade to a DSLR or openly say they are learning the basics of manual mode on their camera.

Manual mode on your camera gives control of your photography back to you and allows you to be creative with it, understanding it can be the single biggest or hardest thing you will learn in Photography as it involves learning about light, and how to capture it. ISO, shutter speed and aperture control light for your photograph and after the course this will no longer seem to be technical drivel as you will fully understand them and their effects on each other and your photography. In short, you will control them and your camera giving you the knowledge and confidence to further your photography.

The course is assignment based, I will explain the principles behind something and provide examples then ask you to shoot three photo's. Then I will critique them. The course works better if 5 or 6 people do it together as all can learn from each other. To this end it will take place in a private forum area away from GC (This is because a lesrning environment works better in private, nobody else jumping in and offering advice that may confuse or mislead) that I will setup. As it is through GC that I do this and GC members taking part only I would ask that a GC Admin or Mod also take part (preferably a photographer, but not essential) so that they can see what is going on.

And why do I do this for free?

I can still remember back in film days when I learnt these principles and had to go through quite a few rolls of film doing it, until someone offered to help me and then it all happened so quickly and I was off and running!

    What you will need.

A DSLR or a camera that is capable of shooting in manual mode (ie where you can set the ISO, aperture and shutter speed)

30-60 mins per week to read provided information.
30-60 mins per week to take three photographs.

There will be four assignments and the course runs for about 5 weeks or so, this should fit in with even the busiest lives, if not it will take longer...but thats ok as there is no time limit.

Please add a reply here or pm me if you prefer, if you would like to take part.

    Steve...:)

        Hi Mum,

Could you perhaps have a look at your camera and let me know what model number it is, I can then look it up and see if it is suitable for the course.

        Many thanks.

        Steve...:)

        Hi Mum,

I've had a good luck around reading reviews about your camera model and as dar as I can tell it does not have a manual mode on the camera so is not suitable for the course I am to run. Sorry about that.

To the others who have their name in the first post above I'll be contacting you probably over the weekend to get things started for you. Good luck all!

        Steve...:)
