Just on local news a man "Ice Climbing" on Snowdon had to be rescued last night after falling, it involved 'Mountain Rescue' "Sea King" from Angelsey, was it William :love30:. and some American paratroopers on exercises, the danger, expense, diverted resources, is phenomonal, for somebody who chose to risk his "own' life.
I can understand it`s nice to wrap up warm and go for an amble, it is really enjoyable, but to undertake a dangerous sport is surely at your own risk and expense.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-21153195

Hope they send him the bill. When motorists are being told only to drive if its absolutely necessary, what on earth made him think its a good time to go climb a mountain?

Because the best time of year to go ice climbing is in winter.

I used to go walking in Snowdonia, The Lakes, Glencoe and Torridon regularly of a winter, but hung up my ice axe after my daughter was born.

They were all incredibly experienced, so please don't criticise them for being out there.

If you want to have brave, adventurous, tough people in any area of life it has to be encouraged at grass-roots level. Our society is already over-safe in many respects and I wouldn't like to live in a society where this sort of personal endeavour is not allowed.

Think about the other dangerous things that people do all the time but are not held to account for it. Smoking, for example. At least mountaineers are fit and often highly skilled in the pursuit of (sometimes) dangerous activities.

The rescue teams all do outdoor pursuits themselves so will understand the call of the wild, rather than resenting what they have to do.

I've just read that the rescuers were in the paratroopers. I have an ex who was a paratrooper and he loved the life of adventure and still does, and remains an active walker/climber/canoeist to this day.

All experienced and advised NOT to go
Result FOUR Doctors dead, one doctor critically injured, and one walked away to live with it for the rest of his life GOOD WEEKEND CLIMBING that

I think all climbers should pay for insurance or not expect others to risk their lives rescuing them or recovering their bodies

I am fine with the helicopter bit, as they are there anyway, and if not doing it for real would be exercising, Specifically to rescue downed aircrew when we had an RAF

I dont think you should stop people doing this kind of thing, and I do think, most of the time the rescuers are of a similar ilk, as long as those being rescued know what they are doing, but just have some bad luck, etc.

I thought the avalance warning at the time was level 3 - "Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain"

Where did you get your info from?

Yes, unfortunately they could have been the likes of the doctors who end up working in Mountain Rescue Teams, etc.

Does anyone advise people not to climb Everest, I understand its almost a tourist attraction these days, but people still die.
