I think Shiney's is that his default browser is set to, probably, IE and every time he starts Chrome it pops up "Do you want to make Chrome your default browser?" - that would Tee me off too! although I thought it only did that the first time.

I think for others it is a login message for iGoogle or similar - plenty of similar issues discussed, and apparently not resolved, on Google Products forums.

My browser is set to IE but when I go to Google (not Chrome) it does pop up with "Do you want to make Chrome your default browser?" I kept clicking on the X and on something else so it went away for that session. When it kept coming back I started looking for other ways of getting rid of it.

I eventually solved it but not quite in a satisfactory way. I installed Chrome and then told it I didn't want it as my default. No trouble since.

Are there any advantages to using it?

Like you Shiney, my browser is set to IE. I had already installed Chrome and use that for GC and Firefox for two expat forums I visit. I too was getting that message so likewise told it I did not want it as my regular browser.

I don't know the advantages ... if one is giving me grief for whatever reason I use one of the others as a backup. I stay with IE as I have known that for about seven years. T'other half is a Linux fan but hasn't converted me yet! :phew:

May well be "better the devil you know".

Compared to IE7 I found Chrome a lot faster to render a page. More recent versions of IE have improved. I still find aspects of IE clunky by comparison

Chrome address bar has predictive text; it looks in Google, domain names that may match, and your browsing history (so will find GC threads that you have looked at recently, by keywords in the address bar). I find that very convenient (obviously you need to use it for long enough that it builds up a pattern :) ).

    let me try it:

I typed "mo" and its first choice was MolesSeeds.co.uk, offered a search of Google for "mo" and a few recently visited pages on Moles Seeds website.

"stre" gives streetmap.co.uk, "street view" google search, "street map" google search, a strelitzia thread on GC (which was what I was thinking of) and thechickenstreet.wordpress.com/2012/01/11/wheelbarrow-compost-riddle-drying-tray/ - I definitely was not thinking of that! but I did look up that site for a recent thread on sieving soil into a wheelbarrow :) All sites I have used / relevant to things I am likely to be interested in :)

Highlight a piece of text - for example a Latin plant name that you are not familiar with - Right Click and "Search Google". I use that a lot, and it works well. Newer IE version have something similar, but I think using Bing? (which I don't find anything like as useful in its first-page-results, but I admire anyone for trying to build a better/new search engine.)

Similar with highlight text and right-click Translate. IE has that too, but I find IE's translate very slow - although there are times when IE will allow Translate and Chrome won't - an eBay auction description in "foreign" when the rest of the eBay page is UK, for example. Chrome has whole page translate too, it auto senses the language and if you "tell it" then it will translate pages in that language without asking you first. Much much faster than IE on this one, and IE translate is clunky.

      Thanks Kristen, :dbgrtmb:

I don't really need any of those facilities and didn't know about the 'highlight, right click, search' bit. I've just tried it (highlighted strelitzia in your post) and it works - and it was almost immediate.

That's a pretty good facility. :blue thumb:

There is also Google Chrome's 'Multi-Tasking' facility that will speed up/enhance your browsing, full details at http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/multitask.html

I've switched over to using Chrome as my default browser now, I like the additional features.

A couple of things annoy me though, although I set the home page in the settings it ignores that and wants me to 'Sign in to Chrome'.

The other annoying feature is the back button doesn't always take me back one page, sometimes it need pressing several times, this is particularly on sites like ebay. Looking at the page history it seems Chrome gets confused and produces several instances of each page visited.

I've seen chatter on the Chrome Application forums about that. Might be worth a Google to see if you can find an answer. I just get a small "Log in to Chrome" link, top right, on the landing page (which I ignore). No popups or anything like that.

Can't say I've noticed that (with eBay). There is a tendency for more-and-more sites to use AJAX (part of page replaced asynchronously without a complete page refresh) and those page-updates don't get into the browser history - although, maybe IE handles that "smarter" and 'coz I haven't used IE much in the last few years I've not noticed that it could be handled better.

Posting a Reply on here is via AJAX. I don't have anything in the History (i.e. just one link to the thread, not a link to the thread plus a link to the revised thread with my new post). Perhaps IE handles that as two history items?

I spent too much time already googling and trying to sort it. I can live with it as it only takes one more click to dismiss the Sign In page. The behavior is OK on my Win XP PC.

I know what you mean! The Googling I did gave me the impression that it had been an issue for a long time, and Google not doing/done much to address it ...

I had an issue with Chrome (Tabs detaching into a new window when attempting to click on them - it is supposed to do that when you DRAG them off the TAB bar [and handy at that!] but not when you just click them). Lots of vitriolic feedback on the support site, Google saying "Can't reproduce it", took probably 6 months before a fix was released ... so that may be symptomatic of other issues that people are reporting but which the DEVs are not easily reproducing.

Ah! Thanks Kristen, another useful feature that I hadn't realised was there.

I'm a bit sceptical about using google software, they have a habit of retiring their services after you start to rely on them (for me that was Google Sync and Reader), so it doesn't surprise me that their current stuff isn't well supported.

People on the forums get very worked up about how their lives have been destroyed by This Bug or That Bug :) ... errmmm ... its FREE and worth EXACTLY what you paid for it! But disappointing from Google nonetheless and not really, to my mind, in keeping with "Don't be Evil"

Bit late now, but I seem to remember that someone was offering "Better than, compatible with" when Google retired those fellows ??

Are we any closer to being able to post replies in IE7 yet? Can't post at all at work!

RR will have to answer that one, but I wouldn't be surprised if there will be no fixes for IE7 given that it hasn't been updated for 6.5 years ...
