every year in may/June/july, there is a 'sardine run' on the east coast of south africa ...

    Sardine Run

thousands of sardines come close to shore during high tides .... behind them, are a fish called shad which feed on the sardines in a frenzy

and behind the shad, are the gamefish, sharks and then there are thousands of seagulls picking up the pieces

then .... along the beaches are hundreds of fishermen who stand shoulder to shoulder fishing for the shad

total chaos .... and extremely dangerous .... I've had a few hooks in my ears from inexperienced fishermen ... add that to the fights caused by too much alcohol consumption by some, and it is an extremely busy period for the local police force

not worth the effort at the end of the day, but a spectacle to behold

Hi Ziggy, hope you get a good catch. Now, one of the finest dishes to serve with your fresh caught mackerel is warm beetroot, sliced and dressed with olive oil, sea salt and crushed allspice and sprinked with dill or parsley - mmmmm!

Hi, Ziggy, we don,t get many mackeral at Felixstowe because the water is to cloudy, but later this month the whiting start and we can really bag up from my boat, they are equally as nice to eat as mackeral. I fillet them and fry the skin side till they cook right through and the skins go crisp.
Can't eat enough of them myself.

        Full house! (yesterday)

        mackies.jpg

Didn't see the Solstice sunrise yesterday as it was a rather miserable, misty morning on the beach, but I probably got the best tide of the week. Only got sub 100 because a rouge wave drenched me and then I couldn't be bothered carrying on to reach my target.

Soused mackerel for dinner tonight, and loads more packs of fillets in the freezer.

West Bex, opposite the beach huts. Only managed one tide because it then tipped down with rain, then the wind starting blasting in from the SW.

Now what sort of person would leave their long johns on the beach? And why? (perhaps I don't want to know the answer to the last one).
