      Survey question 1.
      Not enough options.
Does not cover ...daily continual maintenance of a garden!

I think you will have upset many 55 year olds.
At 55 you are neither elderly nor old!

Actually, the whole survey is flawed ... it is possible to submit it by ticking every single box (including the "Yes/No" answer boxes :heehee:).

        @Sean Danks

        1) Did you ask your project Supervisor to road test your survey for you before you went "live" with it? After all, that is their job and they should have spotted a) the typing error, b) the limitations of your survey and c) tactful wording to ensure you do not offend your potential target market ;)

        2) Why oh why use "Survey Monkey" for a final year project? :dunno:
I'm fairly confident that your University will have access to Bristol Online Surveys which you could use to produce a more professional looking survey, with the addition of various statistics being done for you by the software.

          Looked again at survey.

"it is important for you to understand why the research is being done"
          Why is it important????
Why is the research being done?
Not at all sure what this survey is meant to show/prove.

At 55 many people are still spending long hours working/traveling to work.
Is it relevant to this survey whether someone is retired or working?

As we get older, a garden can become too much work.
Equally we have several friends who are nearly 80, and still maintain a magnificent, highly productive fruit and veg organic garden, with a pond and masses of borders full of flowers and shrub... they cope with it all ...mowing grass, clipping hedges, digging, hoeing etc etc etc.

Surely the size of the garden is relevant in any survey.
If the garden is miniscule then once a month might be enough to keep it immaculate.

State of health is surely relevant... someone in poor health at 40 might struggle to look after a miniscule garden.

Whether you have a love of gardening will also determine how much time you want to spend in it. For some gardening is just a dreaded chore.

How much spare time you have is surely another factor...many 60 and 70 year olds are busy looking after grand children.

Whether you need help in the garden may be relevant/or not.

Just find it an ill thought our survey.

No ...I do not need to seek help from a University representative to fill it in ...thank you for the offer! I am a mature adult...all be it a grumpy one after reading this thread!

                  Hi Sean,

I've completed the survey but I think you must be prepared for quite a bit of criticism.

You need to realise that for people to complete a survey they need to fully understand the purpose. You have mentioned this but haven't given us any information. Nor have you given us any contact details for the university representative.

Although we like to encourage students we need to be honest with our criticism. We don't mind calling ourselves 'elderly' but do not take it very well when others use that term about us - and 55+ is most definitely not elderly!!! Most 55 year olds would be highly offended. :nonofinger: I'm 'old' so don't really care :heehee:

The questions themselves are not very well thought out as they are too general or don't narrow the topic down sufficiently.

You need to realise that you have approached a group of people who are, mainly, gardening enthusiasts. Therefore, starting off by having the frequency of maintaining the garden as a minimum of fortnightly seems rather ridiculous to us. Most of us would be out in the garden every day, subject to weather. Even the members that are still working full time would be out there frequently.

I have to agree with "M" that your project supervisor has certainly fallen down on the job. The errors (plural) in the English should not have got through. This is a subject the forum has discussed a number of times. It's completely OK for people on a forum such as this to make mistakes in spelling and grammar as it's a social forum. It's not really acceptable for those errors to occur in business or education. It reduces the credibility of the content.

Referring to the content:- the questions aren't easy to answer as the full purpose of the survey isn't explained (I don't think it was, but can't go back to check!). Having difficulty with doing things is quite subjective and the relevance of the question would be enhanced by knowing the purpose.

Size of garden should have relevance to your survey so should included but what type of garden (vegetable, fruit, flowers etc) don't appear to be of relevance. Whether I'm digging the garden to plant vegetables or flowers doesn't really mattter.

Please don't be offended by the criticism as we are trying to make your survey more relevant.

If I may make a suggestion for you to take to the university! It may be a better idea, that before publishing a survey, they approach people such as us to help design the survey with relevant questions.

                  Good luck :)
