Just stripped down a pre freeview DVD recorder, Removed the 160GB hard drive. Powered it up and connected to mac, erased and reformatted and working just fine. Not a fantastic amount of storage but every little helps. Moral is.. never chuck out any kit with a hard drive. It could come in handy if serviceable.

You do need a connection kit to make the power and data connections before connecting to your PC lappy or mac. Cheap enough to buy. If you manage to salvage a drive with BIG storage then it,s worth considering a housing for it. That then makes it a very nice external hard drive. I,m guessing theres been millions of decent hard drives trashed that could still be useful. This is the kit I use. Theres enough connectors to cover all size drives. They are doing a sale on this item at the moment.
        USB HDD connector kit
Please, please, please. If anybody ventures into this be aware there are a lot of very faulty kits out there available from the usual and some of our favourite shopping sites. They look similar but have been known to catch fire! The one I have via the link has good reviews and it,s an British company, although the kit is made in China.
