Hey im hoping you guys can offer some advice

This rose is in my mums garden and its growing too large now. they do cut it down fairly close to the arch every year but its just getting bigger and taller as the years go on

Could they cut it more severely and perhaps down to half the height of the side of the arch so that it grows over the arch and the flowers can be enjoyed and it can be deadheaded.

    Here are a few pics

Hi Dips, as you know I am only a novice gardener, but when we moved we had a rose bush very much similar, it had been left for a number of years and quiet over grown.... I'm sure Rose experts will be shocked :yikes: but I just cut it right down... and it is now quiet nicely growing back at a steady pace and I'm able to prune it to shape so hopefully it will give a good show next year.. maybe!

        Hi

Cor thats huge !! looks more like a rose tree

You need to wait till Autumn before doing anything , plus you could take some cuttings just in case at the same time (hardwood cuttings).

It looks quite old and I know from past experiences that its a 50 50 if it will survive if pruning is severe. If me I would prune it over 3 years and take a 1/3 of this year then do the same until its back to a manageable size.

I think its quite vigorous lol

We will be leaving it to later this year just keep forgetting to take pics and ask lol

We reckon it might be 18-20 years old as we think thats when the garden was done. My parents bought the house 14 years a go and the guy before had the garden done but it was well established when we got it.

The green growth is so thick in places like this

I would take cuttings and start again , you could end up killing your self pruning it ! I bet a cherry picker would be useful

Hi @Dips go for it that when its in its dormant state when you can only see the canes and its easier to see what you are doing then, only my personal opinion (not the advice the rest of the Rose world advise) :phew:I have pruned hard about 3 just like last year and they are now manageable and are being retrained, but you know me "Rules are meant to guide you not bind you":old:;)

              Thank you guys :-)

Mums deicided to cut it right down to the first bits that are green on the stems so about half way up the arch.

She likes the rose but if it doesnt grow back she will replace it with a climbing rose that is perhaps slightly smaller and less vigorous.
