An Alternative Planting for a Strawberry Pot

I've had a terracotta strawberry pot for years and never been able to grow anything in it so I nearly threw it out last year. I decided to give it one last chance with a pack of mixed Sempevarium going cheaply at a local DIY store ..... I didn't even replace the soil in it.
Bingo! Result! One to try if you've got a pot lying redundant in the corner of the garden somewhere ..... :-)

Looks great, and the fact that the pot is well-weathered makes it look all the better!

 

...and even better, just noticed that the Belgian lidl has sempervivum on promo this week (though for some reason are calling them indoor plants!?!)
I think my modern strawberry pot, which I was wondering what to do with just yesterday, has a makeover heading its way!

I've got a perennial geranium on my one because I didn't know what else to do with it (strawberries? Hanging basket, of course). Now I've seen Soup's idea ... it will be on my to do list (Note to self: check Lidls)

 

I had a sedum spectabilis sitting around in a pot, so that went centre stage in the top. (Hubby loves the word "spectabilis", and I think would love to have a bed of all different species...)

I think it looks much better planted up, than lurking in the undergrowth next to the shed!!

Have to admit I always thought Semps were boring so never really bothered, but in the right situation .....

If its any encouragement I can assure you I've probably watered mine twice since it was planted last year and it's in full sun ....

 

I too have one of those pots lurking somewhere (a leaving present from many jobs ago) I have random sempervivums..........and now a task for this morning. Thank you Soup 1 for the brill idea.

But ..... is that a good sign or bad ?

 

Normally when houseleeks flower, that means you loose the individual rosette that the flower spike comes from... The rosette is, in effect, a flower spike in waiting.

However, as your photo clearly shows, if you have flowers, you normally have a proliferation of new rosettes. Looks absolutely stunning!

 

I'm off to find my old strawberry pot right now. Great idea thanks
