I guess sweets don't go off? Wonder why they were dumped? [IMG] Unwanted present or someone been naughty and their sweets confiscated? [IMG] [IMG]

I love finding things in skips that I can make use of/adapt. It brings out my creativity, is free and it recycles! [IMG]

I don't want to put a downer on this type of recycling but technically it could be considered theft.
When I was working at College we were doing a lot of renovation work and we were plagued by people stealing material from the skips and re selling it. The skip hire company were aware of what we were disposing of and had agreed a preferential rate for skip hire because they could sell a lot of the materials on, saving us the problem of doing it. We researched the issue at the time and found that it was in fact theft, the following applied.
Theft Act 1978, Theft (Amendment) Act 1996 says that a person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.
It could be argued that the person who put the articles in the skip do not want them, or why would they discard them but, if the contents of the skip do not belong to that person they must belong to the skip hire company until such time as they discard them, therefor to take something without asking permission could be theft.
I admit that it is highly unlikely that anyone would be prosecuted for taking something from a domestic skip but I would always urge caution and ask permission first.
Having said all that I am sure that some legal eagle will come along and blow this out of the water.

Yes, I've done skip-diving - but ALWAYS !! ask first if I can take something - never had any refusals.

What if they are not in? I have thought about asking but, sometimes, it seems stupid e.g. "excuse me - I see you have thrown out this old bit of broken wire....did you want it or can I have it?" [IMG]

I usually have to respect a rule/law if I am to abide by it. It seems to me that there is a considerable amount that passes people's common sense in their sheep-like obedience to rules that clearly just seem not to always apply....and, yes, I am a bit of a rebel! A lot of stuff in our house (and at our plot) comes from skips, including doors, chairs, timber, bricks, tiles, carpets, wineracks, decking boards, etc., etc., but the most memorable was when, whilst living together before we married, was passing a pub/restaurant refit skip on a night out and seeing they'd thrown all their cutlery out, so we dived in, bundled up the lot, left it behind the bar of the pub and still have the best of it that we still use every day.

They look like the "sweets" that were being used to smuggle heroin into the country i read about last week ? Do they make you feel "strange" after eating one with an uncontrolable urge to have another and another...?

Skip diving is illegal but I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it.

If you take something down to the local authority dump whatever you are taking becomes the property of the dump as soon as it leaves your hands (the staff use it as perks).

I was taking an old office chair to the dump and as I was getting it out of my car someone asked if they could have it. One of the workers told them that it would belong to the local authority and no he couldn't. I said "No problem", shoved it back into my car and told the person to meet me outside the gates. :blue thumb: One unhappy dump man left inside the gates :heehee:

The last time we went to the dump I couldn't believe my eyes! A middle aged couple pulled up beside us & emptied their junk into the skip, but as fast as they emptying the car they were filling it with good stuff out of the skip, I of course with my daft sense of humour found this really funny!
What surprised me was the amount of perfectly good toys which had been just been chucked into the skip, hot footed I found a lady who worked at the dump & said 'there's a lot of good quality toys in the skip over there, surely they should go to charity rather than land fill?' Her reply 'yes, that's right, we take as much unbroken stuff out of the skip as we can & put it in the container over there, the biggest problem is people are too lazy to sort it & put the good stuff in the allocated container!' She went on to say it's illegal to take anything out of the skips!

It's about time mainland Britain got it's act together with recycling! We can take anything we like from our amenity sites (tips) and you'd be surprised at what people find useful. :)

Other half and I had a taste of recycling while away for a couple of weeks, what a pain in the proverbial it is, so disorganised.....and what's the point of separating rubbish into different bins at home when everything in community bins on the street is dumped as it is!

We take all our garden waste to the amenity sites and it's taken away for composting. Anything that can't be recycled is incinerated here or goes to landfill sites, such things as rubble etc.
