Great reading @Bilbo675 thx. There were some great shots on his test page.
Reading through his tips and watching his videos I have a better understanding now.

Hi I turned to dslr cameras due to taking large amounts of pics for various reasons, started with a Sony A350 with normal and zoom lens.
Then had to have a cheap one as a back up so bought a canon 350 rebel and a 75 x 300 zoom, this worked well so when I got my Sony back I plumbed for a canon 100D a new one using the money I got from both cameras and a good deal on tesco ( traded a £50 points to £100 and 20% off ) £374.00 in total
I kept to 75 x 300 lens and also my collection of filters and macro and fish eye filters, so now I have a useful setup the 100D is the same as the other 18 M pixels but has a touch screen and is small retaining all the features.
So fits the hand better and is lighter oh and it takes very good pictures, I use a wifi 32gb card and Photoshop.

Well a uneventful and wasteful trip to our supposedly mega currys super store!
They had 3 out of the 5 cameras that I'm looking at but the Nikon d5300 worked and felt nice in the hand, with a nice EVF. The Panasonic FZ200 also felt nice but didn't switch on. The canon felt good also but again no testing as it wouldn't switch on :gaah: .Really need to test them out before buying as its a lot of money. They don't stock Pentax either :-(

You need a specialist shop to try them all, also I find currys staff only maybe have read the info sheet but no experience ( no offence to their staff mind to many products ).
Still most shops seem to be victims of our online retailers so few are left

Yes but there not doing themselves any favours if most of the cameras don't even switch on!

@mowgley, Curry's after sales service is absolute rubbish as well, I would never buy any major or expensive goods from them as there is next to no back up if things go wrong.

                    I have three micro 4/3 cameras, an Olympus OMD eM5, 2 Olympus Pens and several Olympus m4/3 lenses, 17mm, 45mm, 12 -50mm, 40-150mm, 75-300mm, 60mm macro, and numerous 'legacy' lenses from 24mm to 500mm.

N.B. Due to sensor sizes, all focal lengths are doubled for 35mm equivalents, so range covered is 24 - 1000mm 35mm equivalent.

How do you find the focus speed on your camera?

Oooohh just seen the price a little out of my range

Buy a camera you can handle and at the expertise of your mentality, with a bit more for newly found brain cells ( they can't all die can they ), oh and your budget there's a camera with your name on it somewhere.

Please do not use Currys. Have recently had major problems with them over a TV and home cinema purchased from them that worked for a few hours and would not connect. They would not exchange or reimburse and the units were sent away for repair 3 times at their insistence. They will not honour the consumer act and took 3 months and much hassle to finally get a refund. There are so many people having major issues with them!
Just read their Facebook page to see how despicable this company is. How they still operate is unbelievable. All the best, Russ.

Wasn't gong to use them anyway just wanted to try the camera out. I've had a bad experience with them around 10 years ago and wouldn't buy from them again.

Finally got enough pennies in the piggy bank and treated myself to a Nikon D5500 with the AF-P 18-55mm lens.
Still getting my head around the masses of different setting but very satisfied with it so far.
Got this over the Panasonic fz1000 because it just felt more comfortable in hand.
                            Took these over the weekend
