From googling tho the too hot to touch seemed fairly normal for this imac

Also the gpu failing seems to be very common with most peoples 2008 imacs doing this from 2010-2012 so actually im super lucky mines only doing it now.

As its going into apple on friday i am not touching it anymore.

If replacing the gpu is anymore than £100 which it likely will be i will also not be doing this because of the age of the machine and i have found lots of evidence of the replacements failing from days to months later most not lasting a year.

At the end if the day it is a 7.5 year old computer, its done well, this is the first problem it has ever had and i have not treated it very nicely if im honest.

Im not worried about getting the data back im sure they will be able to do that.

Luckily my brother is going to help take it into the town centre because lugging that heavy thing around is going to be a pain. Sadly we no longer have the box as that fell apart after the second house move it went through.

Im not even stressed about it anymore i think i only got so worked up because everything seems to be breaking at the mo.

last week my toilet broke and was leaking from everywhere apparently according to the plumber. I got that fixed and then the fill valve started messing up so then i replaced that with the help of my mum for unscreweing because im really weak and sick at the mo .

also several clothes seem to have started falling apart but then a lot of them are as old as my imac if not older so hardly a surprise

The roof was blown of my cold frame. One of my cooking dishes got smashed

And im pretty sure something else broke this week too i just cant remember them all anymore

So the computer going was kind of the icing on the cake but now i feel fine about and back in control so its all good.

      good news! ish

somehow and im not sure how but i have managed to get my external hard drive to load on my PC and even managed to get one of my work folders off there so I now have all my data for Design by Hook.

it then wouldn't copy anything else off it but i think it spent the night upside down so im going to keep it upside down today and then try it again tomorrow and hopefully get my seren sketches folder off. it prob wont work but may as well try.

the PC is now running loads better. it did 189 updates last night when i went to shut it down i had already done 50 or so before that.

Now does anyone know much about photoshop and other adobe products. i have photoshop cs3 on my mac student edition along with indesign cs3 and illustrator cs6. i have all the disks for them. When i get my new imac (which is likely to happen) would i be able to use them on it. Obviously i have used the activation codes on my old mac. does anyone know if you can talk to adobe to allow the software on the new comp in situations like this?

i have downloaded the free trial of photoshop elements on my PC in case if push came to shove i could use that for work but its just too basic for what i need. which is a shame because i had photoshop elements years and years ago (over 10) and it did all the stuff i need it to do now but these newer ones are well naff. I have since downloaded the free trial of photoshop CC for the time being but noticed that photoshop CC is now £200 and something odd pounds per year and you cant just buy it forever which is a joke so i want to avoid that and hopefully use my older programmes.

You can use the same licence code on the new machine - there is a small chance that you might have to speak to Adobe to tell them it is a replacement computer, but I doubt it will happen

It is highly unlikely - I have been working with PC's for nearly 25 years and have never known it to happen :)

Really? I have known it happen to loads of people

Thought the whole point of activation codes is so it doesnt go on loads of devices so people have to buy it and you cant share your software with friends.

The only time i know when it doesnt happen is when you copy your mac across from an old mac to a new mac so everything stays the same. It doesnt ask you then but obviously i wont be able to do that this time.

Programs such as Operating Systems will refuse to work if you try and use a code on a different machine, as will some other programs if you try and install them in fairly quick succession -- I recall that Microsoft was recording system identifying information upon software activation to prevent software being used on more than one computer, however I have successfully migrated my Office Pro package twice now without any issue. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I am not convinced that it is as strict as we sometimes think it is; Adobe have a fairly good reputation as far as I am aware, so if you do run into a problem, they will almost certainly be able to help

I have personally had this issue with a repossessed autocad before and vaguely remember that it had to be uninstalled/deactivated on the devices it was on before the code could be used again. Sadly the reposession team at my old work place couldnt grasp that just because they repossessed the disks the company could still use the software even tho they had fallen behind on their payments.

And i know people who had got second hand photoshop or vectorworks at uni and then have to download files of activation codes (obv this is not legit) and try them until one works as the old activation codes wouldnt.

So in my experience i would be surprised if it works without me having to contact adobe but we will see.

Thought i better let u know what happened to my imac

It is the gpu that was the issue and they no longer manufacture it for that model and it would be difficult to find one. Apple can not help me at all with that.

Luckily we can access all my data in safe mode which i now have on a new external harddrive.

New iMac has been ordered and will be coming in a week/week and a half. Then its all about sorting out all my adobe programmes etc

The guy in the apple shop thought it was just a script running messing it up as it was working fine for a bit he then looked away and the screen flashed so we told him and he didnt believe us and then the screen went mental and he was like yeh its the gpu lol.

He was super helpful actually and really good and because we couldn't get a parking space as the queues for the carparks were so long, one of the staff came out to my bros car to carry my imac in for me from a drop off point.

Not sure if they were super helpful for once just by chance or because i dropped in that i was chronically sick lol

Glad to hear you are almost sorted @Dips, and at least your data has been saved.

From what I gather, Apple staff are generally super helpful all the time - I think it is all part of the experience that makes Apple thrive; fair play to them I say. No doubt your new iMac will be even better than the one you had, and hopefully getting your programs sorted shouldn't be too much of an issue

Thanx. This is actually my first experience if them being helpful. They were useless with my iphone last year. The guy was really rude barely spoke or looked at us there was no customer service at all and the fixed button broke again in 15 mins. Previous to that back when i had my powerbook g4, the screen broke two months before heading to uni. It was sent off to germany to be fixed apple lost it with no explanation. When they did find it again suddenly the battery had problems and it never worked again. It had no battery problems when i sent it off. I was then given a macbook pro to replace it which had issues from day one but because uni had started and i needed it and i couldnt risk being without a laptop for three months again i just didnt bother. Plus my mum had been super fed up of chasing them and getting poor service that it wasnt fair on her.

Honestly yesterday was like a totally diff company helping out compared to any expereince i have previously which is why i wanted to avoid taking it into the apple store in the first place.
