Some of the GC Gang know the problems I had when I bought a new Laptop to control the CCD cameras and other things I would be using in the Observatory and the problems I had when installing W10. Now I know that some members have had no issues but since I have had further issues, this time with my Desktop, I thought I would at least tell my tale of woe with both devices.
The Laptop came with W8.1 and a "free" offer of being able to install W10 after the initial installation of W8.1. So I installed W8.1 successfully and then decided to install W10. The installation took over 36 hours with innumerable "just a minute, sorting things", "Okay, let's install" and other messages appearing. I couldn't get any immediate responses when clicking on any windows when requested, each response taking 20 minutes or more to take effect. Eventually, after 36 hours the installation was complete, according to Windows, and then the whole computer froze. I tried everything I could to solve the problem but in the end had to take it to the Local Computer Geek to wipe off W10 to leave me with W8.1, at the cost of £40, and to be fair I have had no problems with W8.1 so far.
Then, having at the same time installed W10 on my Desktop which had W7, I found that my camera wasn't recognised by W10 and I had to find a way around to get Lightroom to download my images and then use that to download onto my hard drive:doh: I put up with that, and a few other minor issues, and carried on with W10. But last week Microsoft issued 3 security updates and I downloaded them....disaster!!:gaah:
The following day I switched on the Desktop and tried to get Google only to find a page coming up saying "cannot find website". At first I thought Google had a problem but on the next day when the same thing happened I realised it was a W10 problem. So I couldn't access my Chrome account or my gmail. Also trying Edge to get to the restore system function wouldn't work as Edge was unresponsive. Thinking that perhaps uninstalling Chrome and re-installing might work I did that.....wrong!! As all my favourite forums are Google supported I found I had lost access to them, so I couldn't get on GC!!. It was a struggle to create a new account but even then those forums wouldn't recognise my new account and give me back my original access. Very frustrating. So eventually after many hours of trying different methods I gave up and, again, took it to my Local Computer Geek so that he could wipe W10, restore W7, while keeping my original data....another leak of the wallet.
Having got back W7 you would think all would be well but.....No!! All my passwords were not recognised and I had to do a lot of changing. Some of my favourite forums had disappeared from the start menu and the task bar so it was a case of restoring them again. There were other problems but I won't go on about them.
So my experience with W10 has been a miserable, and expensive, failure and I'm now back with W7 putting back all my data and passwords, renewing settings etc and W10 is out of the window permanently.:coffee:

I'm sorry it's all gone wrong for you Armandii but I can't help feeling some of this is to do with your computer and not just Windows 10. Although I'm far from being an expert I wonder if your computer should be put back to it's original factory settings and start all over again. You say that you had to install Windows 8, it should already have been installed, mine was. However, I handed mine over to my 'man that does' to set up Windows 10 for me and transfer all my things from my external hard drive. This unfortunately didn't include email contacts or favourites so I've had to set those up again.

Apart from the initial teething troubles and things still lacking from a Microsoft point of view I had no real problems until I downloaded the upgrade a few weeks ago. Microsoft have put all my adjustments back to the way they set them up. The set up for my photo files has been messed up and a few other grievances but nothing that can't be sorted out.

I wonder if, for some reason, it isn't recognising your camera because it's a Pentax. Could there be something that has been omitted from the W10 set up that would recognise it, where as those of us with more common makes have been catered for. Just thinking out loud here of course.

I wonder if FC or Clueless could shed any light on your problems. There is definitely something amiss for W10 not to function for you. Even though Microsoft will be tweaking for some time to come you should be able to use it.

That's the Laptop, Sheal, not my Desktop which is my main usage machine which is now on it's original W7. The Laptop was on factory settings when I installed W8.1 and when installing W10 having it freeze completely. I can concede that maybe one computer having a problem, but I have difficulty in conceding two completely different computers with completely different Windows OS's being the problem. Don't forget that apart from the fact the W10 wouldn't/couldn't recognise my camera being connected on my Desktop I had no other real issues with it..........until last week when the W10 Security updates arrived. So the problem seems to be that Microsoft is chucking out security updates that can hold problems when being downloaded......which means every time they issue one it could be something that is going to make people frustrated. I have real respect for my local Computer Geek who is doing great business with people wanting to wipe W10 off their computers......he says that he won't go near W10 for at least a couple of years and even then he would be working on how it has been improved.

Sorry I hadn't though about your desktop. As you say it's best for you to hold fire now until Microsoft have tidied things up more. My computer chap said he was holding off for a couple of years as well, although he is prepared to work with it on clients machines and keep himself up to date with what's going on.

It's a bit swings and roundabouts really, Microsoft are not that concerned about putting things right until more people use Windows 10. We can't win whatever we do, Microsoft have the upper hand and it's so frustrating.

Well I was going to buy a new Desktop PC this January . This is now delayed until the Autumn due to numerous horror stories relayed on here. Also it seems very few desktops are shipping with W10 installed (ref Ebuyer), why is this ? Probably this November I can buy one with Windows 10.7 installed, that actually works.

See this PC spec does my head in ....

          • Intel Core i5-4460 Processor
          • 120GB SSD + 8GB RAM
          • DVD Writer
          • Windows 10 Professional
          • downgraded to Win 7 Pro 64bit
So it has windows 10 installed and you have a downloadable upgrade ( a downgrade !) to Windows 7 pro !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why ???? So confusing .....

I've not had any problems with Win10 on my desktop, installed about 6 months ago from Win8.

I use a freeware password manager Keepass to keep track of all my passwords and links (URLs) to each site, it's simple to use and means if I lost all my settings or favourites I can easily restore or simply work on another computer. Much safer than a written list in a notebook or whatever.

Well, it's taken me some time but I've got most of my favourite forums set up again. i also lost some security programs on the change back to W7 but was able to go back through my historic downloads and retrieve them. My gmail account is working fine, unlike when on W10, and my Pentax camera when connected to my computer installed the correct software and I can now download directly onto the W7 system without any problem:hapydancsmil::hapfeet:
