If its sharp sand I often use it to open up bought in compost, I can get through a few bags each year, I suppose your biggest problem would be mixing it.

Cut three or four appropriately sized sections off a bamboo cane and wedge them horizontally between the inner and outer pot. Should aid stability and allow humidity to rise.
