I have this book...probably similar to your book. My problem is my memory! Very often fern id involves the sori on the back. It is much easier when book and mystery fern are seen side my side.

I have in the past taken a cactus right out of the pot and let it dry off completely for several days and then pot up with a dry gritty compost and DON'T water. If the cactus is squishy it is probably beyond saving. Neglect for a while may do wonders!

For reasons I won't go into I find myself on here very early today and all I can say is the pages are turning over pretty rapidly at this time.

I agree with @infradig about leaving out cardboard. I would dig some compost into the soil then mulch it with compost. The mulch will keep down any weeds and feed the soil. Bought compost will be OK if you don't have any. I would also leave out bark chips. I only use them on a bed that won't be...
