Plant labels
I also use the coloured labels as no need to write on them if you make a note of which colour applies to which plant. NB don't lose your notebook

If you did decide to remove your grass areas @machtucker, Hakonechloa makes good ground cover. I have it planted under an Acer in my lower garden shown below in summer, autumn and winter.
