Given the probability that you will harvest and enjoy the bean pod rather than the embryonic bean seed, what advantage do you seek ?

Beth chatto's garden is mainly herbaceous and planted with drought resistant stuff showing what can be grown in hot dry summers. Mostly it will be asleep this time of year. I would call it more of a nursery than a garden.

@GreenFingeredPete I agree re tomato seeds. I keep packets sealed in the fridge, and have had good germination of Purple Cherokee for 3 years. There were about 100 seeds in the packet - shame to waste them. I grew about 10, and gave spare youngsters to friends.

I just write on the pot and add a date. When we donate to the charity plant sale we use cut up milk bottles.

Well ... that's something to look forward to!

Hard wood cuttings have stored energy so they can often continue to throw out leaves before they root. I would personally remove the fruits because they are just robbing the energy and won't come to anything. In water you get those little white dots as a precursor to rooting. It's a good sign...
