How do you feel if this happens?
I blame TV gardening shows, they have no relation to real gardening and growing. Instant effect, not keen on garden designers personally.

How to take a Cutting of a Japanese Anemone
If the pot is large enough, leave it in there until you hand it over. Your friend can then check the rootball and top growth after a few weeks and decide when best to plant in the soil.

I was given venison by the local hunt at my last French house, @lizzie27, every winter. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it wasn't. I suppose it depends on the age and what piece it was. I imagine farmed venison would be more reliable. It is a bit like very lean beef.

Great news. I lived in East Lothian and moved to the South Coast and the advice I get here is completely different from when I lived in Scotland.

Dying Privet Hedge
The variegated Pittosporum Elizabeth could work well - one of my neighbours has a very attractive hedge of this. I liked @Plantminded's suggestion of a flowering climber for the arch itself, too.
