I think 2ft diameter (and presumably similar depth or not much less) would be OK for a fuchsia as long as it gets watered in the growing season. They grow easily from cuttings so you could always replace it if it gets too pot-bound and starts to struggle. Top growth size shouldn't be an issue...

I've often had very tiny leeches attached to my arm or hand when messing around in the pond in summer, but they are no more than about 5mm long and doubt they could puncture the skin. I assume they live on the fish.

The bed is 6m x 1/2m two strips. Bit expensive and labour intensive with straw. Vine weevil I did not know about, I'll look that up. I will dig out the older plants and let the new suckers take over.
